The watch that Chet gifted (spoilers)

I have to admit that was only half paying attention, but the watch bothers me.

Chet gives Mike a watch, when it gets pawned, it turns out to be stolen. Why would a famous movie star do that? And why would Chet's wife then just cancel on her order? And whatever their motivation was, why would they show up at the tournament at the end?
