Could anybody tell me what happened to the first dog, Sugar?
And I don't mean the adopted Macho, but the one that is part of the family before Helen meets Mathilda.

Sugar looked really old. Maybe he/she died.

In the special features Alexia says Judd's character puts Sugar to sleep without fighting to keep him alive and that this is Alexia's character final straw that pushes her into leaving her mom and stepfather to live with her father.
