Thats an urban legend. Ive heard it many times by different artists. Its a great powerful song maybe a little to dark sounding for its time.

"Laugh and the whole world laughs with you, Weep and you weep alone" Oh Dae-su (Oldboy)

I have heard it like a million times... and I'm still alive!
I LOVE original song with Rezsö's lyrics (much more darker and depressing than the lyrics by his friend László). Original lyrics are about the world they were living (Hungary after WWI), that's way more obscure than a suicide-love-song. Though it sells better with the love theme, indeed.
Some of my favourite versions are from Billie Holliday (I don't like the "dreaming..." part, but I understand why they put it there), Björk, Christian Death, Portishead, Lydia Lunch and Diamanda Galas. Japanese version ("Kurai Nichiyoubi") by Awaya Noriko, from 1936, it's beautiful too.

Please excuse my terrible redaction, english is not my native language.
