Be careful this movie sticks with you

****POSSIBLE SPOILERS****

I watched this movie some days ago and I was shocked that I never heard about it before as I am watching a lot of horror / found footage type of movies but anyway this is not what I wanted to discuss.

I read a lot of reviews on IMDB for the Poughkeepsie Tapes and I noticed there is one recurring comment: this movie somehow sticks with you and you will end up thinking about it days after watching it !! I read such a comment before actually watching it and I thought it was exagerated ... boy I was wrong this is so true... it's been like 3 days and I am still thinking about it before falling asleep which I find pretty weird.

I can say that as far as I am concerned it is one of the most disturbing movie I have ever watched, I think the last time I felt something similar was when I first watched "Martyrs".

The PoughKeepsie Tapes deserves more love, definitely a 9/10 !

I agree, love this film. It was intense and disturbing. The lady in the police car had me holding me breath for her. And Cheryls arm at the end made me nearly fall off my seat. Love this film. Wish I could buy it.

reply

I couldn't agree more. Very disturbing and creepy and is still stuck in my head.

Spoilers

The scenes you mention plus the one in the basement where you see him crawling on all fours towards here in the background while the camera is focused on her face chilled me to the bone. I've seen a lot of this type of stuff, this one and Megan is Missing are two that really, really got to me. I wish I could buy it too and really support something that could have been run of the mill garbage like August Underground but instead was really special.

I haven't had the time to watch this movie yet but will do as soon as possible as I have a very very ultimately major exam coming up for the next 50 days.

But I've seen Megan Is Missing which was undeniably disturbing especially the pictures of Megan, somehow those pics screwed my head and it has been almost 6 months now but I still got the atmosphere sometimes.

Just a quick question though, which one is scarier and more intense, this or Megan Is Missing?

And can you do a little of explanation based on your pick.

I've known a lot of horror found footage movies and if you're looking for more, try 'Atrocious' and 'Creep', there are the same type of genre compared with these two.

LOL - I had the (mis)fortune of watching The Poughkeepsie Tapes and Megan is Missing for the first time within a couple of days of each other.

I thought The Poughkeepsie Tapes was decent - above average for found footage. The development of the Cheryl Dempsey character was very disturbing. Without going into it too much, the movie creates a painful and vivid illustration of the term "a fate worse than death" that I haven't seen before. Otherwise, the movie has a lot of familiar elements in the horror genre - mediocre acting, some torture porn, the elevation of the killer to an almost super-human status for the purpose of covering up plot holes.

I found Megan is Missing more disturbing mostly because the two main characters, Megan and Amy, were so young. But there is more to it than that: most of the violence is implied - with the exception of a couple of very, very disturbing scenes/images. This resonates with me more than the typical in-your-face gore that we've gotten used to. This leaves you with nothing but your imagination as to what actually happened to these poor girls while they were being held captive. I was also compelled by the fact that we know absolutely nothing about the killer "Josh" - there is no time spent trying to figure out who he is or why he's doing what he's doing - he's just a horrible, horrible person that exists. Whereas in The Poughkeepsie Tapes about 80% of the movie revolves around the profiling of the killer "Ed".

I've seen Atrocious (liked it); but haven't seen Creep - will check it out.

I think that what's going to stay with me is Cheryl towards the end. She truly looks so mentally & physically broken.
This film is horrific but also so sad.

reply

The only thing that sticks with me about this movie is how ridiculous and unbelievable it was.

Why would you want to believe this movie was real?

reply

I agree with the OP, even though this is a fictional film, you can't help but think that the events in this could easily happen for real

reply

They've already happened, a lot of the kills are eerily similar to those of Ted Bundy. Maybe even Jeffrey Dahmer...

reply

I saw it for the first time the other night and it was inspired by the BTK murders. It could happen? It does happen...

reply

I actually had to stop watching it for like an hour because it was so intense.

reply

This movie made me feel uncomfortable through a lot of it, I think it's fair to say it's pretty disturbing at times.
It's sort of the same feeling I got when I saw the first Paranormal Activity, you know something bad is going to happen, but you react to the scene anyway.

Most disturbing film I have ever seen and I just finished watching A Serbian Film.

I kind of have to disagree. I thought the movie was well done but to be honest, I watched it last night for the first time and I honestly had forgotten that I even watched it until just now.

I agree with you OP. I actually watched this years and years ago and i still remember it, but I also remember the feeling I had for a few days after watching it.
Nothing usually effects me film wise, not to sound 'oh im well hard I can watch anything' but it really doesn't. Seen some fairly gruesome films over the years but this is defiantly one that tends to stick with you a bit afterwards, not just because its violent or messed up but theres something about how its filmed and how bizarre it is that is hard to shake off for a while after.
