LOL. Slumdog millionaire = most overrated movie of the last decade. True story.

Where were you when watching the following movies: Star Wars, any of the 100 Marvel/DC/whatever movie Hollywood releases every week?

reply

This was a very good movie in my opinion, but it's certainly not the best movie I've ever seen. People don't realize on the whole that there are many films that feature India that aren't vibrant and exciting in the same way as "Slumdog", but they are deeper, complex cultural commentaries. "Monsoon Wedding", for example, blew me away, and I consider it a notch above "Slumdog"; it's more subtle, less idealistic/crowd-pleasing. Some people don't do subtle, they go the the theatre to see a movie, something dramatic and cinematic. It just depends on the viewer.

its not overrated the movie is simply garbage

its a crappy movie about rags to riches using india to give it more culture, in the end thats just a smoke screen, its just a stupid movie to pluck at your heart strings

Do you idiots really think jamal is a nobel character? his just a love sick puppy holding on to a childrens fairy tale of what he deems real love to be

I mean he thinks his great for saving 'latika' when she would've made more money and be happy where she was, all she did was dancing and was still a virgin, all jamals actions did was get a person shot in the head, and get latika's cherry popped by his best friend

by seeking her out he made her life worse, THEN if thats not worse enough his bestfriend practically GAVE her to his gangsta boss

THEN his bestfriend betrayed him again at the train station, which because of jamals selfish actions she SHOULD of died. Infact if she had free access to run away why not do that AGES ago??

plus realistically you think being away from jamal for that long she wouldn't of eventually fallen for Salim? i mean what? you think because of a little kid growing up held on to some silly fantasy would stop what would REALLY happen?

realistically she would kill herself for being raped by the best friend Salim or constantly banged by the boss or the men in the mansion OR she would eventually fall for Salim, i mean jesus that was a VERY long time to wait. Salim even lied to jamal that she was probably LONG gone.

You think in that long type gap latika wouldn't slowly develop feelings for Salim? its not impossible infact very likely especially if she WASN'T raped by the boss, Salim probably eventually felt guilty and protected her from him for all those years...

The stupid movie is so improbable AND biased created by a english indian comedian "Danny boyle", i mean that scene where the americans are soooo kind and gives the $100 bill and those kind words (made me want to puke) damn kiss ass to yanks.

I mean, what?? Salim just HAPPENS to feel guilty at the last moment for NO reason, then the girl once again has EASY access out of the compound and takes a car that NO ONE hears...

then the gansta boss conveniently watches 'WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE' despite the show was changed to a different channel AGES ago. Pft please, the movie is not good at all. You only like it because its some westernise crap, so it reaches more globally, for all we know there's way better movies in india

Very long, critical review....did you really watch this movie? Salim was his brother.

I've just recently watched this fascinating movie and I can actually understand what the praise is all about.

It ranks easily as one of the best movies I have ever watched. Truly captivating thing.

Some people, however, will never forgive the fact that this movie dared to win so many Oscars- what, a movie set in Indian, with Indian actors and a "Bollywood" feel dared to become succesfull in the world of shallow blockbusters such as "The Hunger Games"?? Are we supposed to accept that so calmly??

reply

I myself don't like to use the term "overrated" often 'cause I, too, believe it is overused. That being said, Slumdog Millionaire is very overrated. It's boring. There's no substance. Some kid wins Who Wants to be a Millionaire because each question happens to derive from a life experience he's had? Implausible, melodramatic film with no likeable characters whatsoever. How The Wrestler didn't win over this (or even get nominated!) is beyond me. That story has heart, emotion, character development, and is, well, entertaining! Artistic films are all well and good, and as a former film student I love them, but you also have to entertain your audience. Slumdog was so boring. Put it up there with Life of Pi, The Hurt Locker, and Milk as the most recent overrated films.

reply

People use the word overused as if it is a fact, something that's been proven.
What people don't realise is that it isn't fact but simple opinions. You thinking it's overrated doesn't make it overrated.

And yes the term overrated is overused. And overrated.

reply

the term overrated is overused

Actually, "I hated this film" and "Worst film ever" are the most overused phrase I see on imdb. EVERY SINGLE movie has at least one thread with one of those titles. It could be Citizen Kane . . . or Psycho . . . or Battleship Potemkin . . . and someone would say, "Worst film EVER!" Either imdb peppers its threads with trolls to stir the pot . . . or imdb's faithful are a sad, hateful bunch.

The ironic thing about your statement is that the screenwriter, Simon Beaufoy, who won an Oscar for this film, went on to write the screenplay for "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" with another screenplay-Oscar-winner Michael Arndt.

To get back to the original topic, though, in the end I don't think Slumdog Millionaire has been either overrated or underrated. It was a huge box office success, and it won 8 Oscars. When I saw the film in theaters at the time, I loved it.

Now, eight years later, it's faded a little in the public memory--back to the point of being "another film that won Best Picture," as opposed to one of the the best Best Picture winners ever. Which seems about right. I loved watching this film, but I have also never had the desire to watch it again. It's not my favorite Danny Boyle film by a long shot--that would be "28 Days Later," which, unlike Slumdog Millionaire, is a true genre-changer. "Trainspotting" is also a better film. Hell, I even liked "Sunshine" and "Millions" more. But it sure was nice to see Danny Boyle get a box office smash and some Academy love. His career since hasn't been so bad, either--"127 Hours" and "Steve Jobs" were both good, and I'm looking forward to "T2 Trainspotting."

reply

You sound like the crybaby actually bro.

Ever not liked a movie that critics rate highly?

reply

Are you kidding me?? It couldn't possibly be overrated IF PEOPLE DIDN'T ACTUALLY PRAISE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE.
Do you know what overrated means?

Also, changing your opinion due to general opinion is super silly. This gotta be the dumbest thread on IMDB.

reply

I don't think it was overrated, but I didn't like it. Didn't hate it, didn't like it. Good movie. 6/10

6/10 = Didn't love it, didn't hate it, but wouldn't watch again.
7/10 = Liked it, might watch again.

I think the 8/10 consensus is fair and I see how it was very well-received.
