Odd Piece

The dialogue of this film was odd to say the least. Fragmented sentences and the father sometimes finishing the son's sentences or ideas. I saw some other threads that mentioned it was obvious that it came from a play. I didn't realized it had been a play first so to me it wasn't obvious. I just thought the style was an odd choice and didn't really think about the style I tried to concentrate on what the dialogue was saying to advance the plot along.

To be honest I was bored at first mostly because of the style of the dialogue, but I was curious to see what happened and to know why the son was cloned. Also the brief description from the on demand menu made me think that in the society the film was set in that cloning was a common thing. Maybe not. I thought more of the "outside" world would be explored, but it stuck to the father's living room area thus the play feeling others saw as being obvious.

Not knowing it was based on a play I was expecting a confrontation scene between the two sons. Something that would be impossible in a play, unless you cast two actors and made them look like twins. Then I got to thinking that maybe the scenes with the different sons were different years? I didn't get any sort of feeling of time passing. At first it just seemed that the different scenes were just different days, maybe they were spread out over a couple of years?

The original son died at age 4. The father had him cloned and these scenes happen many years later, that wasn't made apparent at first. The opening title sequence implies that the first scene is only a few days later when the grown son returns from the hospital after being freshly cloned.

At one point I thought a wonderful twist would be if the father turned out to be the original cloned "son". It wouldn't have made sense but then again not much in this film made too much sense.
