Great to see a show that respects the viewer

I'm a bit late in finishing this series and I must say I was thoroughly impressed with the quality of this show. All the characters were outstanding and it was refreshing to see a TV show that was cerebral but not overly complicated to follow (unlike a US series beginning with L). The ending was just marvelous and a truly satisfying way to end the series. The writers didn't fall into the trap of creating some unbelievable scenario but instead gave us enough answers to keep us intrigued and pleased.

There were quite a number of clues and red herrings spread throughout the series which encouraged one to think abstractly about their purpose. I figured out early on that this shows reality is not quite right - their was definitely a feeling of flux/plasticity about the A2A world that Alex found herself in. The trick of course was figuring out whether it was all a hallucination, a visit to an alternate reality or simply a delusional fantasy.

I'm pleased that the series ended on a plausible and thrilling note. The writers and producers really made it time well spent as far as entertainment goes. Sadly, I just can't bring myself to watch much TV anymore as anything I watch just makes me depressed at its quality. A2A raised the bar so high everything else just looks so lame.

<Sigh> I guess I can revisit the show in the future with fresh eyes.

Life on Mars is great, but I'm one of those who think Ashes to Ashes is even better. The humor is very witty, the crime cases is more interesting, the characters develop from cartoon figures to real persons, Alex Drake is lovely, annoying, strong, determined and able to self irony. Sometimes I miss Gene Hunt laughing in Ashes to Ashes. He had some great laughs with Sam Tyler in Life on Mars. That doesn't happen in Ashes to Ashes. Gene is grimmer, larger than life in Ashes, but also much more attractive. He is the obvious center point to all, and is an unforgettable character.
