US DVD Release

Anyone got a date? I am dying here.

reply

Still no news?

What are they waiting for?

reply

They may well wait until after Season 3 has ended on BBC America, which I guess would be next year as they have only just finished Season 2. The best thing would be to get a nice multi-region DVD player and go for region 2.

reply

We gave up and bought a region-free player and ordered the box set from Amazon UK. We just finished watching the box set tonight.

We finished both the UK and American "Life on Mars" sets on Region 1 release; then we got tired of waiting for "Ashes to Ashes."

Season three Ashes to Ashes was playing on BBC-America, but we didn't want to spoil it.

reply

Any updates?? November already!!

reply

I find that to be amazing, given that I live in Chicago and season 3 never ran here on BBCA. And I've been dying to see it!

reply

Download the bittorent files. That's how I coped. I do want them on blu ray though. It was an excellent counterpart to LOM.

reply

This kind of nonsense -- not releasing stuff, driving fans crazy -- is EXACTLY why people turn to piracy. And the studios then turn around and blame fans for "killing jobs" and "destroying Hollywood" (if only we could).

I am much more likely to buy the 'real' DVDs of shows I like after watching them online. Seeing an edited episode of a show in 6 ten-minute segments on YouTube is nice, but it makes me long for the high quality original version with all the extras.

Certainly the industry knows this aspect of piracy as well!

reply

Have they played season 3 in America yet? I watched season 1, and season 2 was on last year (2010). Have I got that correct? Have they not shown season 3 in America yet?

reply

AARRGG now it is in to April and still nothing. Life on Mars came out in North America, what is with Ashes??

They are playing series 3 on Boston's PBS station starting today (Jan 30)

reply

They need to just stick all three seasons in a Full Series box set and be done with it. I don't even care about extras. I'd be happy just having all the full length unedited episodes.

Still waiting up here too, dude.

Bought the region 2 dvds. Well worth it. I use DVD Ghost software to watch them. I got sick of waiting for region 1 releases. When these shows and movies finally came out, its usually edited for time and content; I'd rather see them as origionally intended.

reply

It's now July 2012 and still no release date. You might as well be waiting for The Phantom Tollbooth to show up on DVD....

reply

Me again - It's now September 2013 and no sign, no news, no leads.

I'll bet this won't get released in the USA on DVD or Blu-Ray.

BBC Wankers.

reply

I very rarely buy DVDs of a series.

But I *really* want to see this!

(btw, Kane, what's the reference to Phantom Tollbooth?)

reply

Me Again - September 2014. This beginning to sound like a refrain.

No release yet. At this point, my bet is that the licensing for the songs is too expensive in the USA. Which freaking sucks, but what are you going to do?

The Phantom Tollbooth came out in 1970. The VHS came out in 1992 (22 years later). The DVD arrived in 2011 (19 years after the VHS; 41 years after the film).

reply

It amazes me that they would release both seasons of Life on Mars (UK) in the US and not release all three seasons of Ashes to Ashes here in the States as well.

If it's all the same to you, I'll have that drink now.-Loki (Marvel's Avengers)

Just to let folks know:

Someone posted in a Netflix review that they had actually written to Acorn media to ask about a Region 1 release. This is the response that was quoted:

"We do not have plans to release this series in the US. The music clearance costs are exorbitant and we cannot make a case to license the series given the sales expected. Sorry about that."

reply

That's interesting. Not surprising, though.

Region-free DVD players are pretty cheap nowadays. Amazon has one I bought for $170.00 recently just because of this series & a region 2 LoM too. Glad I did. One can also play any region DVD's on a computer with VLC player.

reply

Most DVD players can be made region free for free by finding the proper hack code, which can be found on various sites online. It is cheaper for manufacturers to have units that can be set to multiple regions, this being done in the factory

Oh Lord, you gave them eyes but they cannot see...

reply

Very true, but it's not for novices, IMO, and if you choose the incorrect patch it could cause problems.
