So was Nicky Shades...?

**First off, allow me to say that I saw this movie on TV, and I'm not sure how much was edited out.

Was Nicky a junkie? Following the scene when Mike and Nicky help out the coworker who has just been beaten by Phil, they end up back at Nicky's apartment. He's rolling up his jeans, exposing the RPG scars on this foot/leg. He has a syringe. Is he shooting up, or is it intended to be some sort of medicine for his wounds/scars?

Also, when Nicky bursts into Lou's during the poker game -- why is he so mad? Is he just badly in need of a fix and looking for money, or is this revenge because of the beaten coworker? (while we're at it, I missed why that coworker was beaten up in the first place...)

Clearly, Eddie Cahill portrays Nicky as having come back from the war fairly scarred (and I mean emotionally and psychologically). Poor guy. :(

Sorry. Usually I'm pretty good at getting things in movies, but whether or not they intended him to be a drug user wasn't clear to me.

Well, clearly the TV version cut out some of that scene. I saw a YouTube video that had snippets of the scene at Nicky's place, but with a song instead of the dialogue. You can clearly see him shooting up between his toes -- not included on the TV version.

Here's all I saw:

Nicky tells Mike to pull the car around so they can get the broken-jaw guy to the hospital.

Cut to them at Nicky's place. Nicky rolls up his jeans' leg and says, "Nice, right? Our unit hit an RPG. Messed up my knee. Bye-bye football." Enter Nicky's girlfriend and they take pictures. She goes to bed. He turns to Mike and says, "Wake up. I'm not the neighborhood hero."

Can anyone fill me in on what I missed during that edited-for-television scene??

I feel it would go a long way to explaining more about Nicky.

Thanks!

Nicky was shooting up. He was addicted to morphine.

Nicky burst into the poker game because he was fixated on the idea that Tony was a horrible guy who had ruined the neighborhood.
