They Did A Good Job Portraying COLD

I just wanted to say that I'm glad the filmmakers decided to set this film in the late autumn/early winter in the North rather than summertime in the North.
It seems like, if a story takes place in a Northern state, it's during the warmer months 80% of the time (my own anecdotal statistic).
It's like Winter hardly exists in the movies or on television.
Think of some TV shows you've seen set in Northern states, for example:

Seinfeld
King of Queens
All of the Law and Order series
Home Improvement
Any TV show set in Chicago

Sure, there might be *some* episodes where they show some snow on the ground, but the vast majority of the time, it's always sunny and warm.
Same with the movies.
But in Zach and Miri, they make you FEEL the cold.
Those first few scenes in the beginning where hilarious.
Who couldn't relate (among those, like me, who grew up in a Northern state) with having to go out to your car early in the morning and finding your car door frozen shut?
Or sitting in your freezing car and having to defrost the INSIDE of your windows?
Or having to walk around everywhere wrapped in multiple layers of clothing, hats, and scarves, and STILL shivering?
I laughed out loud at those scenes, thinking how much I could relate to these situations.
Anyone else?

Agreed.

I live on idiot island (California), but I could imagine.

Nope. Probably not.

There's plenty of movies set in northern states that "properly" depict cold weather...

Off the top of my head:

Home Alone 1&2 (Chicago/New York)
The Five-Year Engagement (Michigan)
The Social Network (Mass)
Planes, Trains and Automobiles (Chicago, New York, tons of places in the Midwest)

Fargo is probably the best depiction of cold, especially the window scraping scene.

BrokenDreamer--

Yeah, as far as depicting cold, Fargo is another good one, too.

Throwing a bit of white fluff on the ground and then having all of your actors do their thing without even acknowledging all of the other stuff you have to deal with in a cold environment does not qualify as an accurate depiction.

But Fargo is not one of those films. That film, like Zack and Miri, can actually make you FEEL the cold.

Sincerely,

I had a very similar feeling. Having spent most of my life in the upper midwest, and having at points lived in rummy old apts. and driven rusty old clunkers with rear wheel drive that slipped and skidded around in the snow, I could really relate to that aspect of this movie.
