Unfortunately Timberlake....

Can't act! I am huge fan of his music and his choreography and I believe him to be the best at the moment as an entertainer, in my opinion more exciting than Usher and original in his concert production, but the dude cannot act. He should not attempt to tackle roles such as these yet as they require some skill/inner turmoil which I doubt he has and evidently cannot muster. Ne'mind maybe practice will eventually make perfect.

according to the date on your post , you have not seen "The Open Road" since it wasnt released till August 28st 2009 .
I just saw the film , and completely enjoyed Timberlakes very natural relaxed style. his pairing with Jeff Bridges was a good combination , as disfunctional father and son , I believe Justin had a very good director , and acting , as any other art form , takes time to develop, and apparently, they have taken the time to make a very nicely done film .
I was impressed with Timberlakes performance, and If he sticks to it , He will become as good of an actor as he is an entertainer ... maybe better !
cut him some slack, I think he did a great job !

Enough about JT, how was Kate Mara?

"A heavy cost, I pay it gladly" - John Preston

She (Kate Mara) was the quintesential adorable, every boys daydream, Girl Next Door... very sweet and perhaps , not so innocent, nicely played !
once again , the film is very subtle, and low key. believable performances by all . I especially liked that there is a lot of bluezy, gospel piano and organ music in The Open Road, . no chase scenes, guns, very little foul language,no sex or violence... Im glad to see a movie like this for a change !
Jeff Bridges by the way was so believalbe in his role of heavy drinkin, womanizing, good time bar fly baseball player , you might wonder if he hasnt had a little real life practice at those things !

me, by the way

I just saw the preview and this movie blows. Justin Timberlake sucks as an actor just like he does as a singer.

I won't deny it, imma straight ridah, you don't wanna phuk wit me...

reply

I agree with you. People bust their @$$ trying to make it as an actor/actress in LA doing tons of auditions every day and this douche gets cast just because of his name as a singer/entertainer. Same with Beyonce, can't act worth a damn; I thought people would of learned not to cast her in a movie after her horrific performance in Gold Member.

reply

I'm glad someone said it.

In general, I can't stand musicians (especially rappers) who want to become actors. Just because you sell 10 million albums doesn't mean you'll sell 10 million movie tickets / DVDs, it doesn't work like that.

With that said, although I'm no Justin Timberlake fan, he was pretty good in Alpha Dog.

He should have gotten an Oscar for Shrek 3

"He should have gotten an Oscar for Shrek 3"

Nice joke. I LOL for 5 minutes. The dude sucks. And to think he compared himself to Michael Jackson at one point. Can't sing, can't dance, can't act. Should of stayed with N'Sync. At least together, they could produce some decent songs. Still prefer Backstreet Boys. But still, JT = overrated and if he was half as attractive, you would of never heard of him. He'd be serving you fries at McDonald's.

the single movie i've seen were timberlake could be named an actor.

reply

I don't know about that. Cher is a pretty good actress, and even earned an oscar. Plus, Ice T is pretty awesome on Law and order: SVU. I think there are always exceptions to the rule. Mandy Moore is good too, she just needs better movie choices.

Marek: So how does it feel being passed over for 600-year-old ruins?

JT was pretty good towards great in Black Snake Moan. I never listened to one record of his, and I'm not interested in his music. True, in BSM he was just a secondary character and he pulled it off handsomely. I didn't see yet Open Road, maybe being a central character is too much for him, but for bit parts I think he's doing ok.

reply

He was a decent actor in Southland Tales. What a trippy movie...

reply

haha he didnt get cast cos of "his name as a singer/entertainer". he got cast cos of his talent. because ppl r drawn to his genuine approach. because he is believable as a person. maybe they should have cast one of the million robots "busting their @$$" trying to make it as an actor/actress in LA. maybe they are doing tons of auditions and not getting parts cos nobody wants to pay money to see them ruin a movie with overacting and lack of experience. as for beyonce in goldmember, come on man it was possibly the weakest comedy ever made. it was a cash in on a funny character. dont get me wrong i love the movie but it was sad to watch after the originals. next.

reply

Why yes, of course... let's listen to the analysis of someone who can't put together a proper sentence.

reply

It's called reality.. Most movies always cast recognizable leads/co-stars, even a lot of indie films cast somewhat famous people, so more people will go watch it. And don't talk about the few good indie films that had great acting from no-names, those are the exceptions and still nobody goes to watch them unless it gets nominated for an Academy.

No one would even be on this message board talking about this movie if some no-name who "bust their @$$" actor was in this movie. You would be like, who the hell is this?, and not even watch it. And I mean "you" as in general. Plus, it wasn't even the acting, the script was terrible. Nobody complained about Timberlake's performances in Alpha Dog and Black Snake Moan and that was years before this movie.

reply

while I also agree it's "not fair" to give these roles to people based on their careers in other aspects of entertainment... I just finished watching this movie a few minutes ago and thought he did a superb job overall and played off of Bridges quite nicely. And also as someone else said, Timberlake was wonderful in Alpha Dog. EDIT: I forgot 'bout Black Snake Moan... for a very minor part, he did his job perfectly in that as well. No complaints.

OH and don't get me wrong either... i am NOT a fan of his music and actually can't stand that kind of *beep* It's not music, it's micro-produced entertainment with the sole purpose of making MONEY - for people who are too damn stupid to find/listen to real music.

reply

I think he's a pretty ok actor. He did well in alpha dog.

-Spoilers are for the weak

I enjoy the guys acting. Don't know anything about his music besides he was in some boy band. And while I have only seen him in Drama's on the big screen I think he would be great in comedy. On SNL he was a laugh riot at least to me.

Overall I enjoyed the movie very much. Thought all the actors did a very good job.

Believe it or not, simply stating that something is FACT does not make it so. It's only your opinion, and everybody has one.

and by simply commenting that everybody has an opinion does not excuse those who think JT gave a good performance in this movie (I'll leave it at that) of having AWFUL taste in regards to acting. subjectivity is a real bear! especially when considering folks' *beep* low standards for what dictates an acceptable performance in film...or in general for that matter

reply

i was impressed with his acting in alpha dog.
but in this movie, not so much. :/

reply

I think JT should drop his so called music career and focus on acting. I loved him in Alpha Dog and Open Road, and he's has also been great on SNL. Stop pretending to sing and start acting JT.

Wow such bias, I wonder if ppl are just blasting him because he's Justin. Actually he did a good job in this movie as well as his other films. It's sad how ppl try to put ppl in a box.
