The real villain of the film

Was the absolutely god awful driving of everyone else in that city! Sure Russel crowe knocked a guy into the road with his car, but that guy was just fine until 5 seconds later when another car not paying attention pancaked him. How did that driver not see him?

Then when that cop car got spun out of control, the 18 wheeler didn't ever bother apply his brakes before obliterating the poor bastard.

You have a point there, indeed!!

Very good point! Sure made things more interesting though.

In the movie, almost every time there is a camera shot in another car, you see the driver being distracted with something. Just like that girl putting her mascara and crashing her car, the drivers you are talking about were probably texting or talking on the phone or spilling coffee, whatever. The movie is depicting just that... how people are constantly stressed and inattentive. Especially at the wheel. It's basically the theme of the movie (along with road rage).

Yes, this is a variation of a movie cliche. You know the one...

A secondary character walks out into the middle of the street, turns to talk to the main character and seconds later is cannonballed by a bus, truck, etc.

Amazingly, the bus or truck never applies brakes, even though they've had seconds to react. (Humans can react in about 0.25 seconds).

More bizarrely, we never hear the sound of brakes after they smoke the character. Did they not slow down or decide to stop after killing the pedestrian?

This movie makes a point to show that every other driver is distracted. This is how Tom Cooper gets away with alot of what he does in the movie, for instance when he is ramming his truck into the back of her Volvo, everyone around , even those right beside them, are all on the phone, completely oblivious to their surroundings.

This movie does have an underlying social commentary taking place.
