Was Beth illegitimate ?

In my ' One thing that puzzled me ' thread JFLeg floated the idea that Beth was illegitimate ( her mother and father weren't married ). I wasn't sure about that at first but after rewatching the first episode I'm inclined to believe JFLeg was right.

Beth's father said it had taken him a month to track them down and he knew that Beth's mother was mentally unwell so why wouldn't he have taken Beth there and then ? Instead of doing that he washed his hands of both of them and left. That would be much more consistent if he was already married and had another family. There was only so much he could do and if Beth's mother wouldn't co-operate it was out of his hands.

Added to that in a later episode when Beth's mother goes to his house and tries to get Beth's father to take Beth he clearly has his family at home and just wants her and Beth to go away. Then Beth asks her mother "Who was that man ?" That was the clincher for me. If Beth didn't even know who he was then he was an absent father which means he and Beth's mother were very unlikely to be married.

Anyone have anything to add or a different idea ?
