Yes it's very good but what's with the instant genius pills ?

Seems like quite a stretch. Why would tranquillizers turn her into a genius ?

reply

They didn't "turn her into a genius". They made her mind cloudy, which was what she needed to win.

reply

I see , so they made her mind "cloudy". Thank you, that explains everything...

reply

That was how she put it.

But no, the pills did not endow her with some sudden intellectual ability - she had that a priori.

reply

So it's just another case of a critical plot point being waved off with a lame explanation then. Seems to be the new standard operating procedure.

reply

Well... lots of people perform better on drugs. More centered, more focused, more imaginative, more inspired.

I am not sure what you are unhappy about.

reply

It's no big deal and I've only seen two episodes so far so they might explain it a bit better in a later episode.

reply

There’s nothing to explain. The pills didn’t turn her into a genius, she was always a genius, the pills just help her focus more.

reply

Yes I could understand that if it was a stimulant she was taking but not a tranquillizer.

reply

Then you don't know what you're complaining about.

Tranquilizers relax you, help with anxiety etc.
It is very well possible that she needed them to reach a state of relaxation where she could do her "ceiling chess games", while being too tight/anxious without them.

As a paramedic with a (very) basic knowledge in pharmacology, I would not rule this out, especially not for a person that is way ahead of us in terms of brain capacity.

You're nitpicking at the wrong thing.

reply

I think her problem is anger and the pills let her relax and let go of her anger, which allows her natural intelligence and instinct to take over.

reply

i wonder if that's how it goes down in the book

#MeToo

The book was a bit different. Beth used the pills to help get to sleep at night as a child and later on to help focus and limit distractions. Beth avoided the effects of the pills during chess. She found that booze did the same thing, but faster. The pills and booze did not help her win

The only treatment for ADH in the 60s were amphetamines. Caffeine also works but has more side effects in large quantity.
The only drugs that help you sleep are sedatives, which includes alcohol. Not a good idea to counteract stimulants with sedatives.

reply

didn't turn her in to a genius.

but they acted to free her, like the doors composing their best songs while high.

reply

Seemed they were more like Ritalin for her, a medication given to hyperactive kids. (Which makes sense that the orphanage was handing them out like candy to make the kids easier to manage.) Some people who aren't hyperactive take it to increase focus for academic efforts like final exams.

reply

Adderall is another mental performance enhancing drug. It doesn’t gift anyone with extra IQ points but it is used to calm test anxiety and strengthan concentration. Abuse and misuse of it is a problem on college campuses.
