The novel by Walter Tevis

Slightly off-topic (I haven't read it, but want to!) - your library probably offers an InterLibrary Loan service, where they can get the book for you from another library - and it's often free! Ask your local library if that's an option. :)

I'm a third of the way through the novel; the series follows the book rather well so far.

Edited to add; Finished the novel. The series remains close to the book. One difference is Jolene spends lots of time with Beth in an exercise program to get her sober.
