What's the purpose of an 'open' relationship?

Maybe I'm naive but what's the purpose? If you're going to live with someone, that's at least the pretense of a committed relationship. So, if you're going to 'cheat' and the partner knows, that's not really cheating. When you go outside the relationship, that's saying you want something that you're not getting 'at home'...This brings me back to the original question, why cheat if you're in a committed relationship? Why not just pronounce yourself as single and unwilling to commit at this time?

Here's a good question: does commitment equal monogomous? Commitment can be defined many ways and for people that are in open arrangements its about being honest with your partner and yourself that you want more. Also just because you want something else doesn't mean you no longer want your partner. At best most people are just serial monogomists while others have decided to live outside of that model and have their cake and it too.
