Liverpool? What is its significance as "The Gift"?

I thought it was just a souvenir from his travels. Seems as though the people of that town had never left

I took it also to be possibly where he lives when he's not at sea. He gives it to her so she knows where to find him if she ever wants to see him again.

^I don't agree at all with the above. It was just a keychain he bought as a cheap souvenir at one of the ports his ship had docked at, Liverpool. It meant as much to his daughter as it meant to him, which was nothing.
