Show's going downhill already

When I saw the first couple of episodes I thought it was pretty good, not fantastic but good, and the character designs kicked butt. My fave character by far is Nestor. He's a little too aware of his elevated station in life, is cocky and overconfident, and confuses being a true leader with bossing people around, and yet...he's the funniest character in the show, the one who takes most of the punishment (many times undeserved) and he's a great victim, if you understand what I mean. The fact that he gets kicked around so much, especially by that musclebound bully Quest, makes me feel sorry for Nestor and actually like him. He's a little guy, everyone around him is either taller and/or stronger, and all he has is his rank as crown prince, which nobody seems to respect too much. So maybe he's just trying to prove himself. Anyway I do like Nestor, so I was kinda disappointed with the episode this morning, "Death By Mockery" where Nestor was actually acting like an uber-brat and his nicer side vanished. I hope that's just a temporary thing or I'll find something else to watch on Sat. am. And it doesn't help that the jokes are getting worse and worse, and the characters don't do anything very interesting when you get right down to it. You have no idea if any of them actually like each other; all you have is that Quest is contemptuous of Nestor and that Nestor likes to boss him around to get even AND to help find his parents. And it bugs me sometimes that when Nestor gets hurt the other characters just watch or laugh. Pretty over-the-top meanness there - and these are supposed to be the GOOD guys. Sheesh.

I've seen both the show and one of the comic books it was based on. I think that the design of Nestor on the show is superior to the design in the comic book, while Quest looks more or less the same. FWIW, I like the show's overall design better than the comic's although both are very good.

So anyway, I hope to heck the relationships between the characters improve so the show will be worth tuning into week after week. I mean, I'm starting not to care much anymore whether Nestor will find his parents, because there's no sense of urgency about it in the show. So far the characters just have stupid, unfunny adventures week after week and the actual goal is hardly even mentioned. According to Wikipedia, there are some eps coming up that sound interesting: "The Fall of Oddysia, Parts One and Two" makes me wonder if Nestor not only loses his parents but his kingdom. It'd be a great moment for Nestor to rise to the occasion, also to suffer angst over all he's lost. It'd also be a great moment for the characters to band together around him. Face it, the bickering they're doing right now isn't helping because it's just not funny. Nor does it move the story along or develop the characters. The "Mockery" ep this morning could have been very good in that regard: we could have found out, through the mind-reading walls in the caverns, that Nestor secretly respects Quest and is in love with Anna, and that Anna is kind of interested in Nestor, and all that - some real discoveries could have been made which would have made that ep interesting, instead of just LAME.

Anyway, I hope this show gets better. I'd like to have something to watch besides Spongebob (the only decent toon on TV right now).
