Hm. It's been a while, but I recently watched a few so I may be able to answer some things. Let's see:
-we discovered that her step-brother was the abuser (but unclear as to the nature, frequency, or severity of the abuse). One can interpret, based on her fragmenting, that the abuse was bad
-we know her parents did not handle it well-in fact their actions were quite damaging to be honest. Their actions likely worsened the impact of abuse. For instance, instead of dealing with the problem, their reaction was that of denial and "hushing it up" and their actions protected the abuser while punishing the abused (Tara and possibly Charmaine)
-by the end the family finally opens their eyes to their inability to handle the situation and they make the wise decision, together, to have her seek professional help (NOT clear why it took them SO long to get to this point-I think it was Max's fault...)
-in many ways Max is portrayed as this hero/protector but his actions actually are a detriment to Tara. By the end he helps her actually get help. Tara, as well meaning and kind as she is, she is delusional, dissociative, and psychotic. It was a little unsettling she did not seek help sooner-
