People who believe DID is legit are crazier than the DID patients...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dissociative_identity_disorder
"DID is one of the most controversial psychiatric disorders with no clear consensus regarding its diagnosis or treatment."

That line alone makes it about as legit/settled as sexual reorientation therapy.

I mean I love Toni Colette as much as the next person, but this show is simply beyond unrealistic (written by that nut Cody):
- NOBODY would put up with such a nutcase, whether her "condition" is real or not.
- Her kids are clearly traumatized, and the father is in fact enabling a sick/demented person at his kid's expense.
- Are we supposed to look down on regular people who don't bend over backwards to kowtow/enable this sick/dangerous woman?

Yes, dangerous because she plain out assaults that douchebag boyfriend of her daughter's. Who's gonna be her next target?

And they let her handle a shotgun?!!!! I think I'm beginning to understand why so many gun deaths/massacres caused by crazy people happen in the USA if such a demented individual is allowed anywhere near a gun.

The more I see this (guilty pleasure, can't expect to see what implausible absurd BS will happen next) the more I understand why the Something about Mary guy did that jim Carrey movie about crazy people (Irene &myself & me).

Okay, are you a psychiatrist? Have you studied about DID? Or just googled and read the wikipedia file about it? Because if thats the case, stop talking about things you dont know and go get a life

This was a TV show not medical documentary.

Yes, DID is a complex condition with many mental health professionals having different takes on it. (A small percentage don't even think it exists, but they deviate from the APA and DSM standards.) DID has had its issues, like all mental health issues; a history of over-diagnoses, and its treatment in the present still is a work in progress are two examples. I'm not sure what quoting wikipedia was meant to prove.

Those with DID are seldomly dangerous. Rarely do they commit violent crimes. Much like schizophrenics not commonly turning violent, but tv and films makes it look like it's a common occurrence, DID and issues that go along with it aren't depicted completely accurately in tv and film. USoT came darn close. It was a solid show. I wish it hadn't ended so soon.

OP, seriously, I hate to point the obvious but this is fiction.

"Some abused children learn to "go away" while the abuse is occurring. It is how they survive, by mentally removing themselves from the situation. While whatever is happening to their bodies is going on, in their minds, they are somewhere else. Or just blank, not there. They dissociate. Most don't develop DID. A few do.

Imagine being in a boring class or meeting and beginning to daydream. Suddenly, someone gets your attention and you have no idea what has been going on for the last 20 minutes, you just know everyone is now staring at you waiting for some response. Now, take it to the extreme, and you find out you had been doing a bump and grind to music no one else heard for the last 20 minutes because you had been daydreaming about being an exotic dancer.

That is not a medical analogy, and I am not a psychiatrist, but hopefully you can wrap your mind around that example." o.m.
