over 40 can't wear a wedding gown

The Vogue editor (Bergen) said something like being over 40 and wearing a gown is pathetic

Everyday I learn something new!

reply

Over 40 when you married, eh?

She said a 40 year old can't wear a wedding gown without a "Dian Arbus subtext". Meaning the fact that it is so late will be on everybody's mind, it will cause more fascination than admiration and weddings over that age tend to be second marriages for at least one of the two and kept on the down-low. She's not saying over 40s shouldn't couple up, but we're talking about Vogue and people choosing to pose for a magazine. I agree with her and it was an appropriate way to put it.

reply

I found it rather offensive. There is a wedding gown for all ages.

reply

Yes, there is and it should be age-appropriate. I remember in The Golden Girls when Sofia got married in her 80's and dressed as a bride, I thought it was really freaky. Same with Dorothy when she marries at the end. Whatever happened to smart, stylish ensembles for older brides?

But long white gowns in satin with a veil? No and I agree with Enid and that is what is meant by the Diane Arbus sub text comment. It looks wrong and well, freaky IMO.

reply

What about a first wedding when the bride is over 40?

I think brides should wear whatever they want. But Enid lives in a world of rigid rules, apparently.

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

reply

My coworker got married at 50. And she didn't even look past her 30s!

reply

I am getting married for the first time in my 40s. I am wearing a simple wedding dress, though, nothing as over the top as Carrie's.

reply

I hope you'll be very happy! I recently celebrated my 25th wedding anniversary so I think I found a keeper.

reply

Wedding gowns are pretty ridiculous at any age. If you're the only person in a ball gown at any event, you are waaaaayy overdressed, and if you look like a big meringue after your first communion, you're doing it wrong.

Especially considering the price of a typical wedding gown, why do women still even want them? Would a perfect LBD be more appropriate to almost every woman's lifestyle?

Or are that many women still completely invested in the fairy tale princess image?

reply

A LBD on ANY bride is a fashion faux pas.

LBD = little black dress

Good job, snelling.

Well, I had to look it up so I just figured I would help out.

reply

lol omg!! cute!! LBD is a common acronym in magazines these days, but I guess it's a good thing you didn't know that. I'd have to call you Rayon, or snelling-a or something.

reply

I didn't know that acronym. Not everyone who watches a TV comedy is also a prolific fashion reader.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

reply

This is wrong. Dressing at the same level as your guests is never a fashion faux pas.

reply

Because it's a woman's day to be a 'princess'.
The only dresses I don't like are the ones that are sheer around the abdomen and have a bustier top...screams exotic dancer or hooker to me.

reply

Princess be damned. If you're past 40 and believe in life as a fairy tale, you will be sorely disappointed. Actually, you'd have to just be flat out naive and retarded.

reply

Did someone piss in your coffee this morning or what? Unless it's your marriage, who are you to pick an arbitrary age and say someone else can't do something that doesn't affect you?

reply

It's just a wedding. Get a grip.

reply

But, isn't the bride supposed to be the best dressed at her wedding? She should dress worse than the others?

reply

Ah, Vogue. The magazine that put the three-time married Kim Kardashian and her sour-puss faced husband on the cover. I would not trust that magazine to tell me what to do!

reply

Anna Wintour is pretty sour puss faced herself, LOL. I say wear what you want, it's your day!

Don't let anyone ever make you feel like you don't deserve what you want.
