One conversation I HATE in this movie. ...

.....is when Samantha arrives at the baby shower and later the girls question her;
"What exactly are you eating?"
"How could you not realize it?"
"What's your gut tell you?"

Girlfriends don't say that to girlfriends, especially when you're 49 years old. Weight gain comes with age for some and furthermore, some women, older or not, would LOVE to have Samantha's body! She looks great!!
This conversation grates my nerves.

Kim Cattrall was originally supposed to look a lot bigger which would have made this plot point more logical and funny.

She was contractually asked to gain a ton of weight (à la Renee in Bridget Jones) but she never got the memo. There was a mixup and Candice Bergen got it instead. Her scenes were shot first and they were too embarassed to admit the mistake so ...

reply

LOL! Where did you read/hear this?

reply

To me it came off as ridiculous because you could BARELY notice any weight gain. It was obvious that Kim Cattrall just made her stomach stick out as much as possible, or they made it look like that somehow. I didn't even realize why they all looked so shocked in reaction to her "pooch". The situation would have been funnier and better if Samantha had actually gained a noticeable amount of weight.

reply

Agreed, it was utterly ludicrous. Kim Cattrall still looked fit and hot as hell even with a slight pooch. Also, in the scene where they're all sitting and talking about it, you can see that both Miranda and Charlotte look bigger (not by much, but still) than Samantha. They should've just tried to CGI it, like they did with Kristin Stewart in Twilight: Breaking Dawn, when she gets emaciated.

Did any of you watch the series? For anyone else, perhaps, that weight gain would have been nothing. For Samantha, it's a big, big deal. Samantha was always very careful about watching what she ate and exercising. She was very particular about the way her body looked. Indulgent eating like that was something she would never normally do. She was quite thin and very fit. The weight gain, though it might have looked small, would have been noticeable to the other three - especially because they only see her every couple of months.

This is what was so great about Sex and the City that very few people saw. Whether the others ones agreed with her beliefs and attitudes or not, they knew who she was. They would know that the weight meant something was very wrong and they would want to ask about it and help her. If she had honestly said - I'm just tired of worrying about how I look, they would have left her alone. The issue is not the weight, it's what it represents.

reply

Totally agree. She was wearing a crop top baring her midriff! If she had gained weight and felt self conscious, she would not have chosen that outfit. Major goof.

reply

I disagree. my few close friends (male and female) would totally say that. When you are like family (the type of family that gets along--haha) you can say those things IF you know the person has a good sense of humor about it.

I had gained a similar amount of weight last year after quitting smoking and indulging in a bit too many pints of Haagen Dazs to compensate ? anyhow, a friend of mine who I've known since 1st grade sent me a text pic of a chubby cartoon character which read "Don't be sad about a little extra weight....fat people are harder to kidnap!" I laughed the rest of the day. I thought it was cute and endearing. AND, I KNOW her. I know her intention. And she knew how is take it. Geeeez people, lighten up! Besides, remember, Samantha had been through Cancer!!!! If you can't even understand a joke about weight, you'll NEVER get through the tough stuff.

It really makes me wonder how many people on these boards actually saw the TV series IN ITS ENTIRETY. If they did, they would understand.

reply

Real friends will talk about stuff like that. It's for your own good. They don't love you any less, but ignoring issues like that won't solve anything. She gained the weight because she was unhappy, if her friends didn't try to help her then they aren't real friends

reply

Yup...I literally immidiatly distrust anyone who ONLY says nice things to me. Now if it's JUST to be mean / critical that's rude. But the approach is completly diffrent... As in this scene they waited for HER to bring it up then didn't insult her intelligence by saying ' oh no you haven't gained weight!' Blah blah.

reply

Real friends DON'T talk like that. How old are you, 15?

The point the OP is making is that Samantha was NOT fat. She had a slight little tummy. I've seen bigger guts on poodles. She was not fat. Your definition of fat might be why other girls get so insecure and have to look like skeletons.

That scene was horribly written. In fact, most of the movie was. Shame of Michael Patrick King (who wrote many of the original episodes in the series) for totally going down the drain with this one. It was like he was writing the women as four gay men. Which makes sense, since many gay men are very judgmental, fashion conscious and think a tummy means you're morbidly obese.
