Is Pilgrim's Progress unfilmable?

I think we can all agree that no one has ever succeeded in making a really good movie (including TV movies and cartoons) of Pilgrim's Progress.

But I have to wonder, is the book even filmable at all? Take Apollyon, for example. He's described as covered with scales, with the feet of a bear and the maw of a lion. How could you film that and have it not look cheesy?

The book is full of images that, if reduced to film, would just look silly or trivial.

No, I believe it can be filmed without it coming off as silly. The only problem is that Christian themed films usually don't have a large budget. Also most are afraid to show touchy subjects such as violence and sexuality as they really are. I'm a Christian and I'll be the first to admit the Old Testament is full of sex and violence. But it's also full of beauty as well.
