They are Probably the only True christians Left

Yes... to you cherry pickers of the bible, who choose to believe what you want to believe and disagree with things that you dont want to believe.

Yes... to you wishful dreamers of a so called place, heaven, should by now know that you all trying to run away from the truth. Now start believing what the bible says and stop picking what areas you like and ignoring areas that you dont like.

The satanic bible makes more sense.

Pardon my French, but....

...TRUE CHRISTIANS MY BIG, BEAUTIFUL, BLACK ASS.

A lot of stuff in what we know today as the Bible was mistranslated from the original text. To learn more about it, look it up in books on the subject (for instance, in the quote "suffer not a witch to live", what was translated as "witch" originally meant "poisoner"). These psychos take every thing in the modern-day bible literally. I don't even know if it's what they truly even believe, or if they're just bigots who hide their hate under the cloak of religion.

And really, if you asked "what would Jesus do?" how high do you think "picketing funerals and being hateful to other people" would be on that list?

The thing is.. after seeing this documentary last night, I can't really disagree with the topic starter, whether or not he means what he's saying. Religion in its core is a very hateful thing, it doesn't take much study to proove that. You cannot ignore that the pope who is supposed to portray the moderate vision of modern christian believe is also condemning homosexuality to this day. But even besides that, most people that still "believe" today in the western world, believe in a very watered down version of what once was christianity. I think the people of this so-called church should be shot where they stand for the load of BS they are spitting out of their mouths, but that doesn't mean that what they're saying is naturally a misguided interpretation of faith. But since all faith in essence is ridiculous, this is actually a completely irrelevant discussion ;)

Still, you should see things in perspective. Being stupid doesn't necessarily mean that you're a bad believer, in fact it has a better chance of coming close to the true meaning of faith.

Obviously, I'm an atheist that laughed non-stop while watching these idiots, especially that grandfather annex prophet of the church, who dismissed questions by calling the people asking them "too stupid to understand". What a retard.

Well, that's your opinion, and if you don't mind, I'll stick with mine. I know that there's much in the Bible (Old Testament, especially) that if taken literally, as these ass hats do, could be hateful. Still, if you know anything about how Jesus Christ was, whether you believe he existed or not, I doubt he'd be picketing a funeral.

Oh, by the way, I'm writing and op-ed article (as I am a wannabe journalist) about Westboro, in which I say more about atheists who are, I believe, smug about believing Phelps and company are right. I'll have it up on my blog soon.

It's impossible to firm a consistent set of ethics from scripture, because it's so completely contradictory.

On the whole, given the overall tenor of scripture, I'd agree that Phelps has it much closer to the bone than the "god loves everyone" brigade. In fact, that stance is the epitome of dishonesty, and I can't help but think that some of the vitriol aimed at WBC is because of this very fact.

The very fact that so much of Phelps' preaching is vindicated by the Bible is reason enough to dismiss it as the nonsense it is (as if you needed anything other than common sense).

The bible?!
Have you ever sat down and read that thing? Technically, we're not even supposed to go to the bathroom.

There is a Simpson's quote for every situation in life.

reply

Yep, a quote from a character who's a perfect personification of a typical fundie hypocrite.

And as far as Phelps and company go, wake up and smell the coffee, folks. These people don't give two sh!ts about God, Christianity, or the Bible. All they care about is drawing attention to themselves.

Not just the bible, as I said earlier the Vatican to this day condems homosexuality. They do seem to understand it's pretty much a lost cause by now and they will not make too much fuss regarding the subject, but if you think christianity or any religion for that matter is all about peace and love than I'm affraid you may be more naieve and oblivious about your beliefs than some members of the sick cult potrayed in this documentary. They take it to the extreme of course, but you don't have to take your beliefs purely literally to come to some of the conclusions they seem to have reached about what's right and wrong based upon the religious tradition. And to me it's about just as offensive to be some kind of moderate believer who just picks certain rules or teachings out of a religion that he seems to like or agree with and then condemning people with a more fundamentalistic approach to their beliefs as it is to be those fundamentalists themselves.

I can understand a lot of people need some moral ideas upon which they can base their life, and religion seen as a life philosophy can be of some assistance with that. But as soon as you introduce an unseen godlike creature into that mixture, people just start to make ridiculous claims about truth, goodness and what to do with infidels which evolves in something like these nutcases and eventually terrorism. Because that's where this is going. As seen in the documentary, they are obviously very hated and this will only make them even more radical in their beliefs, until they are convinced that just picketing some funerals isn't cutting the case anymore and they have to take matters in their own hands by starting a killing spree. Or if we're lucky, they turn out to be one of those cults that commit an act of mass suicide. Nodoby would miss them anyway.

Of course the vatican dismisses this.

People are trying to turn this into just another race of people, rather than a sexual perversion.

The day the vatican supports these people is the day the world dies.
