I was wondering if the film was adaptation from a play, due to the style in which it shot and the inner monologues by the characters addressing the camera etc. Or was it just a creative way to deliver exposition and for the audience to get into the various character's heads?

Actually I think the talking to the audience thing was taken from some recent British productions.
