Is the ending a homage or a ripoff of 'Of Mice and Men'?

Surely I cannot be the only one who noticed the similarities. The mentally challenged guy accidentally kills the pretty girl and the mob wants to extract revenge on them. However, in this movie instead of putting him out of his misery the lead character tries to save him.

Just a thought.

I noticed this as well. Perhaps that's where the writers got the idea from.

Just remember that the EXACT same plot device happens in the movie adaptation of Frankenstein, so Steinbeck could've very well gotten the idea from the film.
