It wasn't the childless couple. It was the woman's husband. He was having an affair and was just crazy. He killed her.

Thanks! I have to get to bed early!
shareBehold, I wander in as yet _another_ who asks the ending, because of a power-failure at 7:40 pm on August 19, 2011, that forced us to miss the last 20 minutes (or indeed the last 4 hours, were the show that long :) ).
Now KAnnD86 has given an answer - thank you! - but I am still puzzled. The detective _said_, "we got our man." In the scene where the husband and neighbors sip wine and have a moment of silence for the murdered wife, there is also mention that even a confession has been obtained. So how does it get to be the husband who is the perpetrator, after that?
Thank you for your time.
