Alternate Ending (Spoilers)

First of all i loved this movie but i have to agree with whoever said the ending was a letdown. The Alternate ending However was bloody brilliant. i can understand why it was changed but the festive birthday party ending really changed the feel of the movie and opened up a chance at a sequel, and had some great Callback References (hoping the Cake Was Red Velvet). i just feel the alternative ending was justified after what the lawsons Did to Elmo
(I've Seen Many Horror Movies &Some Of the Things they Came Up With Were BRUTAL!) That They Might Have deserved it just a little bit. In The End When they Went Primal They Were Worse Than anything Otis Probably had Done. the Alt Ending In My Opinion Is The perfect ending.

Can't agree more. The alternate ending was HUGELY superior and brilliant. Needs to be restored in a director's cut :-D

The alternate ending shows Otis with the family half-naked, bound and gagged in their living room. Otis has setup the scene like a demented birthday party. They all have scripts in their laps and Otis goads them to play their part (much like his female prisoners).

The father has a noisemaker in his mouth and there is a funny bit where Otis has to threaten him to get him to blow the noisemaker on command. Then, Otis begins opening the presents. Each present relates to an object someone used on his brother when they murdered him. So, Otis croons thanks and childlike wonder over each item (golf club, blender, etc.) and ends with menacing promise to use it on the person who "gave" him the present.

At the very end, Otis bends toward a cake candle that is in the foreground of the shot, blows out the candle, the screen goes black . . . and with perfect timing a sudden bleat from the noisemaker breaks the silence; credits roll.

Comic timing here is great, the noisemaker bit is done perfectly . . . it's a bad-guy wins ending, but I think it's brilliant because we start the movie in Otis' world; he is not a half-hidden, mysterious killer . . . in fact, we get enough evidence of his life to possible feel embarassment or pity for the poor guy. Also, much better ending for sequel :-D

personally that sounds decent. but I would much rather Otis get plugged by the shotgun. I never felt once for his brother, glad he died. and otis, sure he's sympathetic, but he beat women, mutilated their bodies.

reply

right right . . . not "really" sympathetic; just from a camera/script/point-of-view perspective . . . i'd never feel for an actual serial killer no matter what happened to them in their life . . . but since it's a black comedy and they show Otis' past that's what i meant

but the great horror series have a guy that survives movie after movie :)

How does Otis capture the family?

I prefer the Alternate Ending over the original! So much better!

Why do so many people think Otis was killed in the ending?

If the movie does well, and they decide to make another one the the family 'jumped the gun' again and killed another innocent person.

If it doesn't do well....the body is Otis--or you can choose the alt ending.

But it was left wide open.

After the torture scene, I wanted that family to burn.
In the Alt. Ending, when Otis punches the kid brother in the face, I cheered. That kid needed to die.
The father deserved to get HIS vocal chords burned out.
I hate them all.

Ironically, there's a crazy person out there who thinks this exact same thing about you. And a crazier person thinking that about him. And so on and so forth. A vicious cycle, like the Neverending story, but more murderous.

I agree. The alternate ending rocked!

how Otis is able to tie up the whole family?

I just don't see him doing it on his own.

Does he just have them tied up or do they show how he catches them of guard?

I watched the movie on netfilx online so I can't see the alternate scene myself.

Thanks.

I thought the alt ending kind of destroyed the sympathetic angle the film had going for Otis. Obviously he had major problems but these were stemmed around a singular psychosis and women... attacking the whole family, even after his brothers death was just out of character. I prefer the original ending for sure.

I just finished the movie. I didn't get a chance to see the alternate ending, but I think the real ending has a lot going for it. The person they shot at the end easily could have not been Otis. Riley even says, "Is it him?" before it fades to black.

The alternate ending sounds good, but I like the real ending fine enough.

reply

I really like the original ending more.

The alternate ending simply deviates from the goal of the movie. The main goal of the movie was not to show how demented Otis himself is, but how demented the family is. The Otis plot is really just a set up for that. The fact that they exclaim at the end, "Is it him?" justifies that. The family just got so reckless and paranoid that they had no consideration who they kill/hurt in the process. We don't know if it was Otis or somebody else in the end. We don't know it until the end, but the family are the so called focus of the film, not Otis.

I also agree, the alternate ending sounds good, but I liked the original ending, very funny and 'Just do it' kind of way, it's an open ending, I don't think it's meant for it to have a sequel, but rather the way some movies end, and yeah, in my interpretation it was Otis body, a big fat guy just like him, even tho it's unlikely he'd still be working since the FBI already found him and his house through the Pizza parlor.

Anyway, this movie doesn't try to be edgy or try to be more intelligent than it actually is, it's an entertaining black comedy and I liked it. 7/10 easily.
