More DVDs on way????

Really hope the release of this documentary means some of the harder to find movies mentioned will find a DVD release!

Over the past couple of years, labels such as Umbrella have been releasing these lost gems to DVD.

I'd love to see releases for Dead-End Drive In and Harlequin, especially!

I picked up Howling III and Return of Captain Invincible in a boxset (also with Communion) from EzyDVD, but it was by total chance that we (I work there) got it in (bought out some dodgy schlock distributor from the US).

BMX Bandits, Mad Max and Stoned are pretty much available everywhere, and I know Turkey Shoot, The Man from Hong Kong and the Barry McKenzie films can be ordered from EzyDVD, and I'm guessing most other places, if they don't have it in store.

reply

Umbrella have already put out Harlequin years ago. Dead End Drive in is available from Anchor Bay in the US

really hangin out for the Man From Hong Kong DVD which is apparently gettin released in November...

reply

Yeah, I ordered a copy of Dead End Drive-Inn from the US after Turkey Shoot blew me away. And it's great!

I also once borrowed a copy of the Man From Hong Kong on DVD from a Uni library. It was a version released by Screensound Australia, but would be nice to see a more available version when it comes out as I have never seen another copy of this.

You would be interested in these then:-
from the UMBRELLA ENTERTAINMENT WEBSITE

"Ozploitation - Vol 1 & 2 (6 DVD Sets) - With the relaxing of censorship laws in the 1970s, a feast of B-films exploded onto Australian screens as audiences lapped up a diet of murder, mayhem and full frontal nudity. A feature of the hit documentary, Not Quite Hollywood, 12 of these classic “Ozploitation” films are presented in two exclusive DVD collections, each choc full of sex, violence and foot-to-the-floor action!” (November)

Vol 1 - Adventures of Barry McKenzie, Razorback, The True Story of Eskimo Nell, Long Weekend, Fantasm, The Chain Reaction

Vol 11 - Stone, Turkey Shoot, The Naked Bunyip, Roadgames, Harlequin, Night of Fear"

Sadly I went out and bought most of the these individually on the day of their DVD release.
Here's some further interesting news from MADMAN ENTERTAINMENT:-
"Thanks for your email. ‘The Man from Hong Kong’ and ‘Stunt Rock’ are both due to be released December 3rd. ‘Deathcheaters’ and ‘Dead End Drive-In’ will also be released at the same time.

It’s best to keep an eye on our website for upcoming releases."

Great discussion :)

I already had Razorback, Roadgames and Next of Kin before seeing NQH but have managed to track down the following:-

'Patrick' doesn't seem to be available here but you can get it from Amazon (together with that dodgy Italian sequel!). I managed to find a copy at Video Ezy which was handy :)

'Long Weekend' is readily available from EzyDVD (I got it on Ebay tho) and is very worthy.

You can pick up double packs of 'The Cars that Ate Paris/The Plumber' and 'Inn of the Damned/Night of Fear' from JB Hifi (I believe).

'Thirst' is also avalable from JB (and EzyDVD I think).

'Howling III' was amazingly difficult to locate considering it was available in large quantities everywhere for $1 a couple of years back (when I had no interest in it!) but is easy enough to get on Ebay for about $6-10.

I personally really want to get my hands on 'Dead End Drive-In' and 'Dark Age'.

I already had "Turkey Shoot" on DVD before seeing "NQH" (I've got the Region 1 version, entitled "Escape 2000"). After seeing "NQH," I've been looking out for, and acquiring, some of the films mentioned in the doco. The horror/action movies of the 70s and 80s interest me much more than the bawdy Ocker comedies though.

JB Hi-Fi is pretty good; I've picked up "The Long Weekend," "Thirst" and "Fair Game," and I've spotted "Stone," "Road Games," "Harlequin" and "The Survivor." I do want to get "Patrick" and "Dead-End Drive-In" - I haven't seen the former anywhere, and I know that there is a Region 1 release of the latter with audio commentary by Brian Trenchard-Smith.

I'm in Perth! But I'm sure if I keep looking around, I'll spot "Patrick" somewhere. If not, I have to think that a re-release will be on the cards, along with the other titles coming out in the wake of "NQH."

reply

The local DVD release of PATRICK through Magna Pacific was a garbage transfer. Pan & Scan with several scenes edited.
If you can get the Region 1 version with Commentary by Richard Franklin, trailers, gallery, etc amongst other things.

reply

That pan and scan version of "Patrick" was out on Magna Pacific around 2000, most likely the same video master from the mid-80s--how about a 30th Anniversary Special Edition?

Also just picked up the excellent 1985 thriller "Fair Game" starring John Denver's ex-wife Cassandra Delaney, beautifully restored in 16:9 and 5.1 sound: if it wasn't for NQH, I would have never have seen (or heard) of this great little movie--no masterpiece, but a neat lady/revenge/mayhem movie (made by video distributor CEL, their one theatrical movie which came and went in a week)

Also NQH--magnificent, and needs to be seen in a big theatre for the nearest to a drive-in experience one can get--I loved the fact that every great scene of nudity and violence from 50 R rated movies makes it into this movie, yet it's released with a MA rating....many a 14 year old kid lining up to see "Hellboy II" never knew what he had missed. No doubt the dvd release will get the R rating back, sorry to say.

I wonder when "Not Quite Hollywood" will be out on dvd (or bluray) - I heard that the original cut of this documentary was 4 hours--will there be a release of the 103 minute version or one day a 'directors cut' of 240 minutes? I'd buy both!

reply

I got a copy of "Patrick" from Dirt Cheap CDs in Perth. It was the $10 Magna Pacific Edition.

BTW, I read a DVD review for "Not Quite Hollywood" in a local music paper today - has the film come out on DVD already??

reply

According to the ezyDVD website, "Not Quite Hollywood" will be released on DVD in Australia on 3 December 2008, as a 2-disc set with the following special features:

* Introduction by Quentin Tarantino
* Commentary by filmmaker Mark Hartley and NQH participants
* Audio interview with Richard Franklin
* Deleted scenes / extended interviews
* Ozploitation panel at MIFF
* Trailer reel of featured films
* Image galleries
* Original theatrical trailer

reply

Introduction by Quentin Tarantino?!

It's kinda sad that it takes him to give his seal of approval on these movies before they get their dues, but I guess whatever it takes, and I have found a new respect for him since seeing the doco.

Ozploitation panel at MIFF

GREAT!!! I missed out on seeing the MIFF screening (I caught it straight after the festival's only showing at a special charity screening the George Cinema before the wide release). I can't wait to hear the questions and points raised.

I'd really like to see Dark Age finally get a DVD release (let alone an Australian release, as the damn thing's been shelved for twenty years here!), despite the dodgy croc. I think Plugg and Australia After Dark are just begging for DVD as well. Even some of those terrible-looking films at the end (Sons of Steel, Out of the Body, Blood Moon) should get a look-in eventually.
