My Interview With Christophe Honoré: There Will Be A Sequel!

That's right, if you're a fan of the movie or Christophe, you will be happy to know a sequel to "Love Songs" is in the very early stages of happening.

Enjoy!

Thank you!

Glad you enjoyed it JMM-

I was incredibly thrilled to hear of a sequel and I know fans will love the news.

I dont know if I like the idea of the sequel. Will they have Louis and Gregore back to reprise their roles and what will the story be like? I would assume it could only mean the break up of Ishmael and Erwann which would disappoint me greatly. It ended perfectly with them together and starting out their new relationship.

reply

Well we have three years or so to wait for the sequel to happen, but I know Louis and Gregore will return. If you read the interview Christophe pretty much says they won't last and I imagine the story will revolve around Erwann's eyes wandering towards other men. He's young and he probably grows tired of Ishmael.

Alice will be back as I asked apart from the interview whatever happened to her and I imagine Julie will also still be on the minds of people.

I can't wait!

Scott:

Thanks for your pieces. Is there any chance of getting (last year's) screenplay (in French)? I would kill. (Obsessional turning into fullblown nutcase here, by the way.)

Anyway, if any more tidbits come along, please do let us know.

I'm wondering what the last line is-

"Aimez-moi moins, mais aimez-moi longtemps." That's the best I can do.
Ismael seems to leave out the last "moi."

Well I had a chance to read the interview and it is good but I doubt there will be a sequel to this. Christophe sounds like he is kidding about making a follow up. And it leaves to interpretation by the audience and their own thinking if Ishmael and Erwann do make a go of their relationship.. Althought highly unlikely, maybe they have what it takes. All depends on how strong their love becomes.

But I am glad there was some laughter to the sequel idea. Most sequels dont work and I think "Love Songs" ended perfectly with the hope of a long relationship with much happiness for Ishmael and Erwann.

JMM, thanks for the props. It's probably my favorite interview I've done so far.
I unfortunately don't have access to a script to the film. I would try to find someone who worked on the film and had kept a draft or something.

Grendel, thank you for the props as well. I love Christophe's work and it was a thrill to meet him in person finally and interview him so candidly.

I can tell you honestly he wasn't kidding about the sequel. There's no script yet, no one is signed on and everything is up in the air as of now but some songs are confirmed to be written and the idea is there and when he said "In three years or so, you know- there could be the possibility of a sequel" I believe he meant it.

I don't usually like sequels either but I feel the story ended too soon and I would kill to see where Christophe takes these characters next.

Also in my opinion, I saw the whole Ishmael and Erwann thing as extremely depressing. I think Christophe did too. I mean he ended it with them on a ledge and he said he did it because they could fall. Ishmael is falling into his arms because the devastation of Julie's death is beginning to really sink in.

I really want to see where Alice ends up and Julie's sister. In 2011 or so I hope to see the sequel hit Cannes.

I think a good film maker leaves it up to audience interpretation. No i did not find it depressing at all regarding Ishmael and Erwann. I think they found each other at a pivitol time in Ishmael's life. He is grieving but why not fall in love with a beautiful boy who can help you through your grief and despair? However brief or long it may be?? I dont think Ismael or Erwann are looking down the road as to their future but living for the moment since Julie has just died so tragically and so young.

I saw this film at the Toronto Film Fesitval last year. I must have had a more mature audience because no one was nervously laughing during the love scene between Erwann and Ishmael. Of course everyone was crying the previous year during the screening of Brokeback Moutain so it maybe a festival crowd that has no problem with men loving each other in film.

reply

I agree. At first I was excited by the news since I love the first, but I also thought it ended perfectly and wouldn't want to see Ishmael and Erwann break up.

thanks for the article, op. it seems to me that the sequel might be losely based on the first story. guess we'll find out in 2011? please do keep us posted.

on a side note, is the director gay?

reply

I loved the film and I will definitely check the sequel... but it'll be hard to top the first, it ended perfectly in my eyes.

I'll be excited to see the sequel because Love Songs is now one of my favourite French films ... well, modern French film.

:)

At the same time, I also agree with everyone that the ending was perfect -- the symbolism of the ledge, Ismael in the same yellow sweater that he had on in the beginning when he was in his apartment with Julie, the ambiguity, the last line from the Jewish book. It was absolutely perfect, and I'd hate to see something follow that might be different from what I imagine.

I think the sequel will feature Erwann distancing himself because he's found interest in girls, not boys. For some reason, although from Love Songs we're led to believe he's gay, I feel that he is just young and doesn't know what he wants. So he'll try it out with Ismael, then find himself slowly attached to a girl from school, and Ismael will be disappointed because Ismael will have created an emotion attachment that he didn't want with Erwann. That would be amazing.

reply

Oh please, if Ismael and Erwann can't be together at the end, don't give us a sequel. Just leave us hoping with it. It will be okay if the movie portrays the ups and downs of these two but eventually they are still together. Hey, I only like HAPPY ENDING!! :-)))

reply

Why would you want a sequel? It ended absolutely perfectly?

Modern filmakers don't know when to quit!

I would love to see a sequel if it featured different characters.

It doesn't look like there is a sequel. unless you count les bien aimes
