Question about Erwann and Ishmael

I found it difficult to believe the statement Erwann makes to Ishmael about him being the first boy in his bed considering how quickly he became attracted to Ishmael and how he deftly pursured him. I dont know if I believe that Erwann is a virgin because he definitely went after what he wanted.

Regarding Ishamel's past relationships, is this his first boyfriend? I find that hard to believe too although considering how romantic the film portrays their first time together, maybe so.

Excerpt from an interview with CHRISTOPHE HONORÉ:
And (what do you think about) Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet as Erwann?
"He was in André Téchiné’s LES ÉGARÉS. I remembered his voice well; it has a very specific quality like Chiara’s or Ludivine’s. Indeed, we found out later that André had spotted him in a choir. Grégoire represents a certain idea of youth without falling into the clichés or sexual fantasies of our times. His beauty has an open and unostentatious side to it. I wanted the character to be a young man who has no doubts about his homosexuality but who hasn’t had an affair yet. Erwann isn’t tormented by his sexuality but by his feelings. Grégoire displayed a form of simplicity and kindness that quickly convinced me that he was the right actor for the part.

Excerpt from an interview with GRÉGOIRE LEPRINCE-RINGUET:
How would you describe Erwann, your character?
"Erwann isn’t very mysterious or very complicated. He’s a young man who has his whole life ahead of him and who experiences love instead of going to school. That’s very beautiful, we’ve all dreamt of doing that! Erwann quite simply accepts the fact of falling in love with a guy ten years older than he is and who may not necessarily be homosexual. Erwann is naïve enough to believe that if he gives all his love, shouting it from the rooftops, it’s bound to work..."

Jmmgallagher where did those two interviews appear in? I would like to read them completely.

Thank you so much for posting these comments. It helps a great deal understanding the character of Erwann. I wonder if the director spoke about how easily Ishmael falls into an affair with him.

As you are interested, Haywoods and grendalmonster, go here:

You can download, in either English or French, the entire Press Kit for Les chansons d'amour at the 2007 Festival de Cannes last year. (Paulo Branco of Alma Films is the producer.)

The Press Kit contains lengthy and very interesting interviews with Christophe Honoré (the writer-director), Alex Beaupain (the composer), Louis Garrel (Ismaël), Grégoire Leprince-Ringuet (Erwann), Chiara Mastroianni (Jeanne), Ludivine Sagnier (Julie), and Clotilde Hesme (Alice).

Enjoy.

That's an easy one. At that age you don't bring people home; you do it on the spot or go to their house. At that age I never wanted my parents to find out what I was up to. I only went to two guys' places in Paris- one had the house (big apartment) to himself while his family was on vacance. Many guys still live at home with family into their 20's as housing in Paris is expensive.

I didn't necessarily think he was a virgin. He said that Ismael was the first boy, not the first person. What I love about their relationship is that it showed that sexuality can be fluid. I don't want to reduce it to simply a dramatic ploy, but themetically, it fits: Ismael sings about how Erwann is the water to his drought. But really, love itself is fluid.

It's really not hard to understand how quickly a person can become attracted to another. "Love at the first sight" is possible. I think Erwann might very possibly be a virgin. One of the few books in his room when Ismael teased him "A beautiful room is empty". I look at the symbols in the movie that tell something.

reply

Erwann was gay. 'The beautiful room is empty' is an autobiographical novel by Edmund White about his early experiences as a gay young man.
