I've seen it yesterday and liked it. I think it's not as good as takeshis' - it lacked it's subtlety and lyricalness, but it was funny. Don't you have the feeling that it's a parody of fellini's 8 1/2?

Just watched it yesterday. Kitano's 8 1/2 is a pretty good description of this film! Maybe Kitano's Bunuelian take on 8 1/2?
At any rate, it was a very cleverly done picture that paid great hommage to the filmmaker, entertained (or annoyed for those not used to this sort of thing), and was a huge middle finger to mainstream Japanese pop cinema. This is why Kitano is amongst the best living directors in Japan (or the world, for that matter) today.
