I must have poor taste in anime

I loved this and Outlaw Star, but neither of those shows really seemed to find a good audience. I know that Darker than Black has a second season that has yet to be translated into English, but why can't these shows get a good following while shows that make you cringe at times, (Naruto, Dragonball series...) get hundreds of episodes?

For the record, I loved DBZ as a kid, but even then there were times where the childish nature made me cringe. And I could never get into Naruto.

Well, I guess thats what happens. They make thousands eps of whatever sells. On the other hand, would you like to see hundreds of episodes of Darker than Black? Me, not necessarily.

DtB seemed to me quite popular, as opposed to incredibly good series such as Now and Then, Here and There or Beast Player Erin that never achieved a status they deserved because of not typical art and animation style.

DtB is actually a pretty popular series. It's hard for anime, especially newer anime to get instant large followings outside of Japan. However, this can not be compared to long running shows like Naruto, DB, Bleach, One Piece or any other number of shounen jump series because they are manga that has been followed for years (decades) and are being translated into anime. DtB is a new original work so it comes without already having a following and it has had much less time to get one. I don't think your taste in anime is poor or weird, theres just not that much exposure for it in the states. As for length, the quality would probably be hurt too much anyway.

TL;DR This isn't a long running manga, therefore it won't be a long running show. Also, being long isn't necessarily a good thing.

Animes that are 70-50ish episodes and lower are usually better than then endless animes like One Piece and Naruto. The production value is generally higher, the stories are more thought out, and they have the ability to be more serious and do some more experimental stuff than the "mainstream" endless anime. The shorter anime like this one and others can still be extremely popular, but they are kept short so quality can be better and they are easier to manage. Not all short anime are good of course, and there are plenty worse than the endless anime out there, but there are a lot more that are better than them. Darker than BLACK is also getting a third season, so it is popular, and plenty of other shows that are popular and shorter have also gotten 2-3 seasons and a movie or two. I am glad that there are short animes, because I don't want to watch hundreds of episodes with half of them being worthless, so I am glad Darker than BLACK is short. All of my other favorite animes are also 12, 13, 16, 24, 26, or 54 episodes long, so I think the shorter formula allows for higher quality and better work.

Both the OVA and Season 2 of Darker than Black have been dubbed.

Tbh even though DTB is much better than Naruto I wouldn't want to see hundreds of episodes of it. As long as series 3 is on it's way I'm fine with how many episodes there are. The main reason Naruto sucks is overkill. It would be ok if there was less episodes

Second other commenters here. I wouldn't want to see hundreds of episodes of DTB either. What I'd like to see is a third season that can capture the essence of the first and wrap up the ending of the second, essentially, because fans need it.

In actuality, I actually wish they would redo the entire season two AND season one in a way, and put it all together in ONE season and the ONE season that we should have gotten which explained EVERYTHING. Of course, fans can dream. That would feel satisfying now. They just really needed to spend a few more episodes developing Hei and the fictive universe itself so we actually know wtf gates are, why they appeared and why this is significant. It's a great setting but it's almost as if the storywriters are afraid to explain these things because it would ruin the magic.

I wouldn't ask for what the gates are to be explained but it would be nice if they tied all the weird stuff together for us. For example:

The Gates opened due to some scientific experiment and the first 'Dolls', human simulacrum with psionic powers but no will of their own, came about. Someone tried to recreate Dolls by sending people into the gates and the whole fake stars/meteor showers thing came about by these people's wishes.
Meteor-victims became 'Contractors' or 'Moratoriums' which are pretty much half-Dolls.
Kirsi had somehow disappeared (bodily or mentally) into one of the Gates but merged with Yin (a Doll of her) at the end of the first season, much like Bai had merged with Hei. At the end of the second season, Hei was basically given his power back so he could divide the Yin/Kirsi entity into separate bodies.

But that's just me. ...or the clinical depression talking.
