The Mao Situation (spoilers)

Ok, I just finished watching the series.

Did anyone else find Mao's "death" a little tacked on and meaningless? It's as if the writers wanted to kill off the character but couldn't think of a fleshed out/purposeful way to do it.

I mean, lets look at what happens: Mao hacks into a database, relays some seemingly useless information, says his good byes, loses his mind, reverts to a normal cat and runs away. All of this happens within about 3 minutes...

Don't get me wrong, I really liked the anime, engrossing story, engaging characters. However, I really didn't like what happened to Mao.

He didn't just suddenly lose his mind, the Syndicate pulled the plug on his memory storage, which he knew all along they would do if he ever disobeyed but helped Hei anyway. But then he's back in the continuation without an explanation. I guess you just had to plug it back in.

Oh... I see. As I recall there was no mention of that. Mao simply said he had been caught hacking the database and he had been in there too long. So of course, I assumed that was the cause of him losing his mind.

He also said that Dolls and others would slowly lose their minds the deeper they got to the center of the gate, he could have lost his mind and ran off and got out of the gate and got reconnected?
