The Ending

Does anyone know why Caroline was only sentenced to 20 years? Why wasn't she sentenced to life in prison or life in a mental institution? This mentally unhinged murderer is eligible for parole in 2013.The very idea of someone this disturbed and extremely dangerous being able to come out at such a young age(33) is a scary thought.I bet some people who think it isn't fair for a mentally disturbed person who committed a brutal planned murder to be in a mental institution for life,WOULD NOT be ok with Caroline or someone just like her(just with a different name) living with them or in their neighborhood. It's not like Caroline was a person who only wanted to harm herself(people lives wouldn't be in danger of being killed by her).If that was the case Rachel would've never been murdered by Caroline.EDIT: I just found out that this murderer was released from prison 4 years earlier than her original sentence of 20 years.Does anyone know of any mentally disturbed people that the parole board let out because they believe they aren't a danger to society anymore but once they release the person from the mental institution they commit crime again.Or attempt to commit crime again?

I don't know laws in AU but from a U.S. perspective she did premeditate this murder so I don't think she could claim insanity. Regular jail for her with psychiatric and psychological intervention. Maybe 20 years is the standard for murder in AU. She had to to do a minimum of 14.5 years but was denied parole (Barber family wanted her to do 18 to get more help). The family has forgiven her and has asked that everyone leave her be.
