Loss of the supply truck with the colours

What are the colours? I'm guessing a flag but not sure.

Also, why are the colours so important (with regards to the fact that that one truck could have been abandoned or destroyed at any time, why so much riding on it)?

Also, I thought they would have destroyed the truck rather than simply abandoning it with it's cargo.

I believe colors are flags or pennants used to represent an individual unit. You might Division, Battalion, Company, etc. "Colors" were irreplaceable. I don't know if they are approved by the service or not.

"the colors" refers to several flags, but most of the time in the marines it refers to the battalion flag, along with it's campaign streamers (smalls strips of color that show what battles the unit has engaged in).

If you want to argue, or don't believe me, first read the wikipedia page, it's all there.

They said "the colors we have carried into battle since Vietnam". It plain and simple the battalion flag with the campaign streamers on it.

You would think! But that would have been "logical", and one thing that was often missing during this mission (with that leadership) was logic!
According to the book they discussed both options and decided to leave the truck behind and return for it later. The truck wasn't damaged, just stuck in the mud, and contained mostly MREs.

In the Military A units Colours are a flag which (in the Commonwealth at least could be different in the United States Military) That is unique to the Regiment or Battalion and has a list of battle honours bestowed on that unit.
