Trombley wouldn't be considered "apart of the xbox/COD generation" because well when the actions of this miniseries were taking place Xbox was only being released.

To take the term "CoD generation" really literally I don't think Call of Duty got big until CoD4 in 07. Before that it was a World War 2 game. That was a long time ago but I think in that era modern war games tended to be more simulation style like the Tom Clancy and Delta Force games and appealing to more of niche market.

" I saw him as raised on videogames, and when we were doing the boot camp stuff I was like 'Man, this is just like videogames...' It was just like Grand Theft Auto -- and Trombley's quoted as saying that in the book. I could just relate a lot with Trombley, in general. I think I'm a good person; I don't think I'm evil, bad or anything, so I don't think Trombley was."

There were shooter games before Call of Duty.

I seem to recall Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Counterstrike, Medal of Honor, etc.

There have always been soldiers like him...

There were probably ancient Romans who volunteered to join the military just so they could have their own gladius and get the chance to stick people with it.
