Disgusting, repellant ending... (spoiler)

Take the most irresistably appealing actress we've seen in years, certainly the best Russian comedienne in decades; let her megawatt-light up a script that would, in lesser hands be tedious and unwatchable... give a frankly magical performance... then turn it all to crap by callously killing her off... an ending worthy of an adolescent sensibility that somehow imagines death the proper ending for a romantic comedy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Somebody needs to get laid already... and learn the meaning of the expression "life-affirming."

What a thoroughly unredeemable piece of S%#t.

I really think the titular allusion to Andersen's The Little Mermaid should have prepared you for the gut-wrenching ending. I was more surprised by the way the director managed to make the ending a shock; it was very finely judged.

Perhaps you're being sarcastic. Dunno.

This movie was great; loved every second of it.

Me too!

The moment I saw the title in my email in-box, my mind was flooded with images from the film: images of the sea and the beach; images of the mermaid with her green hair; the oligarch powering her way around Moscow, in her fast car, with a toy-boy at her side; the girl on the skate-board, and so on.

The imagery was so strong that I was slightly surprised when I remembered that I saw it with subtitles. Many of the argument scenes were so vivid that I imagine I saw them in English.
