The only movie from Bollywood that competes with the BEST hollywood movies has got to be No-smoking. So, I wouldn't think twice before labelling it the best bollywood movie till date.

First you need to read about it, why he made that film and the whole film was a metaphor based on his experience with indian film industry and censor board.

abstract yes..but ground breaking ??not at all..just senseless..i ve seen lynch s films and i know what abstract is...like i said its just wannabe..will be forgotten..is appreciated by guys who ll do anything to get away from the stupid yash raj films that they find this crap awesome,jus because its different

it took some time for the feeling to settle in....and when it did...i was shocked at how brilliant one can get!!!

No Smoking is one of those films which will be ripped off and remade several times in the future...because there are very few people who will accept this movie!!!

kudos to kashyap....my respect for u has tripled!!!!

Agreed 100%... This way better than usual Hollywood crap, i had given up hope in Bolly Cinema, but this is truly unique. And I just want to hang all those brain-less critics...

I just heard a Radio program's Review somewhere where they said that this was the Worst Movie of the year!!the only thing good about it..is the Music

Anyway..i cant wait till it gets released to Dvd cuz am a Huge John Abraham Fan!

Think of the smoking habit as our sins in this world, the Prayogshala as Hell and Baba Bengali as the Devil/God. K wants to get rid of his smoking habit (a.k.a wants to rid of his sinful consciousness), and he walks into Devil/God's hands to purify himself. Baba Bengali tells him he'd give him three chances only and even then he doesn't listen, nothing can help him and his smoking habit will never end until he dies.

If you look at it from a religious point of view, it's like God gives us a few chances to repent ourselves when we turn to Him. He doesn't tell us what to do until we ask Him, so when K goes to Baba Bengali, it's like he turns to God to ask for guidance. We're given a few chances, a few obstacles to prove ourselves. If we fail or we keep on ignoring God, He abandons us and our inner 'goodness' dies (K burning in the fire). But we still keep on living and doing sinful acts without any shame because the God inside of us won't talk to us anymore.

That's what I collected off the movie. There's a lot to it than only just that, but that's not something you can exactly pin-point. It's very subtle and you can't tell what it is. For instance, I showed the movie to my sister and she had nightmares even though she wasn't scared during the movie. The exact same thing happened to both of my cousins, and myself even.

Ah the movie's so, so good. I simply adore it!

abstract, brainy and satisfying? yes, sir. definitely.

Best ever in a sense that I've never rated a Bollywood movie as high as No Smoking. Of course it's completely opinionated.

Its , for me the most original and probably the best Bollywood movie, I've seen ..
Glad to see something of this in Indian cinema .. Kudos to Anurag Kashayp ..

I don't know what you guys are raving about so much??.....This was an absolute disaster for me and worst 2 hours of my life. Absolute non-sense. Its abstract, true! Its different than usual bollywood isthyle, true! But its the best ever??.....huh....no ways.....far from it.

I just don't watch movie for visual effects and picturisation.Does it ever bother you guys that there was no script and no logic at all?....

In one scene John Abraham is in Siberia and the next scene, he is running in the streets of Mumbai??....huh??.....time travelling???.....what was that ???.....There are so many such instances in the movie and I just cannot go on & on about it....I know its abstract but come on its challenging the viewer's intelligence now..There are just so many senseless sequences in the movie and I've lost count of it....

I'm a big movie buff and I've watched lots of abstract stuff and appreciated it ....but this one just beats me....pure crap....worst ever movie on my list and its peerless at the top.

No need to bash me up....everyone is entitled to their own opinion. (I'm not abusing any of you guys for liking it... ;))

Why don't you look for logic where you should ; like in Movies like Dhoom !!
This movie is a journey on which the director takes us .. It's not as fantasy like as Harry Potter or Narnia , but a subtle more of a nightmarish visage ...

Agree with you, cinema is not about song and dance, slapstick comedy or just some random drama, this movie was entertaining from start to finish. What a movie sirji what a movie. Need a little bit of patience and brains to understand whats happening though...

the best thing about the movie:
All those who don't like it are so because they didn't understand/comprehend or are confused of the plot.[They say so, don't they?]
And those who like it don't want to/can't explain.
[There are a number of noetic interpretations though. I like the way its been described here in this thread.

Two sorts of people get the movie better than others:
people with an addiction problem
people with high IQ

One of the best for sure. But whats disturbing about this movie was that it was the biggest flop in 2007. This shows how much we respect cinema:-(
