The Over-acting Wu Jing

Is it just me, or this guy really tries his best to put forward the most screwed up 'menacin' face each time he's supposed to look mean. He might be a kungfu ace but I wouldda thought this actin should have improved by now. Ugh.

Then there's the other one-dimensional kungfu star - Donnie flippin Yen.

reply

its because asian stars look at the facial expression as an instant reflex muscle, kind like the instant way they stretch a leg to kick someone. either that or smoothly cool cheesiness.sad really but its in the culture.stephen chow doesnt count.

'You need people like me so you can point your f--kin' fingers and say THAT'S THE BAD GUY'

reply

Maybe you should watch some Chow Yun Fat. He's a great actor. Also, you might want to check out Anthony Wong, and Tony Leung Chiu Wai. Cant go wrong with them usually.

reply

People accuse asian actors of over-act a lot, yet i hear no one complaining about Di Caprio "scream all the time" acting in the Departed. Seriously, it's more or less the same thing anywhere. Not to mention that action movie stars usually just don't act, in that area it boils down to two things: they either have a screen personality or they don't have it.

"I believe the common character of the universe is not harmony, but hostility, chaos and murder."

reply

You want to see some overacting:

Al Pacino, Sean Penn, Daniel Day Lewis.

They come from the YELL UNTIL YOUR FACE TURNS RED AND VEINY school of acting. People talk about them like they are gods. I do like Daniel Day Lewis and Al Pacino anyway, but Sean Penn sucks.

These Kung Fu guys are taught to make angry faces in their Wushu training. It makes it more dramatic, who cares. Jet Li pulls it off quite well.

I've seen much worse actors than any of those mentioned above, so cut these guys some slack.

And Donnie Yen is the shiz.

reply

Who cares. I watch a Wu-Jing for his skills.
You want to see him acting? then try the martial art 'drama' Fatal Contact. He gets to 'act' as a more of a nice guy in that slow sentimental film. Fights are good, story is dull.
Anyway, I like how he chews up the screen when he plays the baddie.

Wish that Tony Jaa would take some notes & at least meet half way...

reply

I don't think he's over acting... but I hate Nicholas Tse, i hate his acting, the way he cry or laughs etc.. it's so fake

Better to rule in Hell than to serve in Heaven.

reply

Nah, his acting was more than fine imo. He pulled off that bad ass look.

reply

A bit of off thread topic.

I was going over the cinematography of this actor and I noticed that he has played Wu Jing or in one instance Jing Wu a couple of times in various movies. Does any one know why this occurs?

reply

It's an attempt to Westernize the name so audiences know which is his first from his last, maybe an attempt to appeal abroad. Case in point, Jet Li. Wu is the last name, then the first - this is the way all Chinese stars have their name appear: Chow Yun Fat, Mui Yim Fong, Lam Tsing Ha, Li Gong. In some cases, if the person is well known, the first name comes first: Gong Li, Anita Mui (Mui Yim Fong) Brigitte Lin (Lam Tsing Ha). They may just leave it the Chinese way as with Chow Yun Fat. In Wu's case, I think it's the people behind the scene rather than him. Either way, Wu Jing/Jing Wu - it's all the same.

reply

now he's jackie wu or is it jacky
