is a hospital more expensive than a midwife?

so giving birth in a hospital would be more money rather than having a midwife?
I am so curious to know for the future because I would love to have a midwife than be in a hospital... would insurance cover it?

Not sure HOW much insurance covers but they said in the movie that hospital birth can cost $13,000, meanwhile one midwife charged $4,000 for everything, even being on call basically anytime for 9 months. I think that's pretty amazing.

In the U.S. most hospitals will not allow mid-wives, they are competition for the Doctors. In Germany mid-wives do all the L&D, doctors are around if there is a problem.

If you have insurance though your work, birth in a hospital will be covered. Home births may or may not be. Mine did not cover home birth. Some cover it, depends on the provider.

Birth in a hospital may be covered but many still have a hefty co pay or deductible.

You have to ask around. The midwives are the best source of information because oftentimes the insurance customer service people will automatically say it is not covered when actually it is. If the midwife is on the panel of providers the reimbursement people don't care where the birth actually takes place.

It really depends on the insurance.

Based on our last child and the current pregnancy... In my area, prenatal care costs about the same whether it's an OBGYN or a midwife. It amounts to about $2,500.

Vaginal delivery at the hospital runs about $12,000 and a midwife at a birthing center costs in the ballpark of $4,000.

None of the midwifes in my area do home births.
