I read the first couple of stories and have to ask...what research did these people who chose home births do? I mean really...Chinese herbs to stop bleeding? Not transferring when there's a serious problem? This sounds like issues with the midwife (kinda like how many doctors suck?) rather than the issue being the safety of home birth.

Choosing a midwife really shouldn't be much different than choosing a doctor. You want to be sure they know what they're doing and you trust them. It's like any other profession - there are crappy ones out there. You do your research and get yourself a good one. I would not personally trust a midwife who planned to stop bleeding with herbs and would not enlist the services of one like that. I want one who knows her limits and when to call in the hopefully unnecessary back-up.
I agree, seems more like a cruddy midwife than a problem with home birth per se.
