Man,after all the wait and holding out to see this film, I finally picked up the DVD tonight and I'm pretty disappointed. It was a little too dry for my taste and found the whole 'mockumentary' to be extremely bland. The only thing I thought was funny were a couple of the lines by Gunnar Hansen, but man, that's really about it- and that's not alot. This is in no way shape or form what the cover claims to be..." this is spinal tap for horror"- no way! I'm kind of disappointed to see Anchor Bay release something like this. I LOVE cheesy b-films..and I mean cheesy, and even this is below the lowest of those standards. Save your money, buy Anchor Bay classics.
Maybe you guys were in a bad mood when watching this but I thought it was hilarious. The story was really good and the cast is amazing! David Naughton, Brian O'Halloran, Gerry Bedknob(sp?) who was ridiculously funny, Gunnar Hansen was priceless in the role and Ken Foree with his story of pants defication? Come on, also, tell me you didn't think the whole scene with Ellen Sandweiss and the unfortunate bathroom cleaning mishap didn't have you busting out laughing. I think the entire movie was great and the reviews for it are spot on. Comparing it to a Christopher Guest movie is like comparing every single back in time movie to BACK TO THE FUTURE, you can't top a master of their craft and this movie wasn't trying to be more than it is. Working on film sets myself, I've seen alot of these events occur and Mena captured it amazingly. Give it a second watch...my guess is you will enjoy it more.
I love mockumentaries when done well, and was a huge Clerks AND American Werewolf fan, but this movie is full of decent ideas that just aren't executed. I hate to say it but most of the actors here, even the stars, seem to be going through the motions.
I wanted to like it but you can't force yourself to laugh when jokes fall flat because everyone's overacting. And to be completely honest, some of the writing is pedestrian. Like what?
The scene where the guys drive by repeatedly interrupting the shoot. The painfully long scene where they're being shot at. And about 30 other scenes.
On the bright side, if you liked this, I'm sure you'll be a big fan of something like Midgets vs Mascots.
