Rocky for Women

Very good story, good movie, solid character development. I hope this is just part 1 with more to come... after all, Rocky lost in the first movie too.

Ah come on... This is a 'Karate Kid' knockoff, and if I have to watch the 'Karate Kid' I want at least one "wax on, wax off".

Rocky my bum

Though... have to say she looks better than Daniel-san.

reply

No, this is a very good movie.

No it is not. If you want to make a drama make a bloody drama, don't mask it as a kung fu movie.

reply

You're wrong. Nothing is being masked. It is a kung fu story line drama, like that's never been done before? You know Karate Kid, you think this is a rip off of is a drama, and hell aren't thousands of martial arts films dramas? Yea you have no idea what you're talking about.

Well, The Karate Kid was a drama trying to appeal to men, thus adding the matial arts aspect. This movie did the same, but... A. We have seen it before and B. it was not done right, the kung fu aspects was anything but realistic, but the drama in the movie was realistic... So they should have either made a kung fu movie with all the stops or made a realistic movie about the life of an young second generation immigrant who used kung fu training as a way of focusing. Instead they tried to remake Karate Kid, and it just didn't work.

By the way... martial arts movies are just like pornos, you don't need that much of a plot, it's the action people wants to see. Try and watch the classic MA movies, their idea of drama is "you killed my wife" "And you raped my daughter" "let's fight".

reply

Basically you're nitpicking. First you say it's too much like another movie, then say it's not enough like older movies. Well, which is it?

I'm thinking you didn't like it because the main character was female.

The reason why I started bickering was because this does not resemple Rockey at all.

But let me try and put it simply: A MA movie must be about MA, the story helps it along, but it is all about the fighting, be that with a male or female lead. This is not a MA movie, it resemples The Karate Kid alot, but the fighting is unrealistic, where in the Karate Kid it is realistic (sort of). Had it been realistic all the way through it would have been okay, but now it seems like some guy wrote a drama, was missing an end and xx pages, watched The Karate Kid and then just copied the plot... poorly... without knowing anything about kung fu.

If they had made the entire movie unrealistic, then it would have been more like "no retreat no surrender" without the ghost, and that would ok too.

All in all it was sold as a MA movie, it's not, it was passed off as original, and it's not...

PS. As I said this lead looks way better than Daniel-san, and are just about equally girlie/butch so it's not about the lead being female.

Incidentally I feel the same way about National Treasure, it's a Indiana Jones knock off...

reply

National Treasure is obviously an Indiana Jones knock-off, but it's still an enjoyable movie. Just being a knock-off doesn't necessarily make it bad.

I find knock-offs to often have a better quality ratio than remakes.

Well sure, remakes suck and some knock off's are good, though I cannot think of any right now... So the question becomes: Is Fighter better than the Karate Kid or Rocky/million dollar baby (I guess... haven't seen the latter, but have heard good stuff about it)

My answer, as you know, is no. I hate that they strive for realism and don't deliver for more than half of the movie and what's up with the ninja? I get that it represents her repressed self, but it just seems like they wanted to add some wireworks without making the movie too unrealistic. In KK they had realism from start to finish, the fighting moves was believable and so was the story. And of course the master was more likeable in KK than in F.

As for Rocky... hemm I don't know. I don't see the link, in R he tries to make it big, using his 'last chance' (until the sequel that is) and in F she tries to get a hold of her life, balancing between two worlds, bettering herself through 'Kung Fu' (which could have been anything else as well).

The Ninja made FIGHTER more like a rip of Bruce Lee's story "Dragon" than Karate Kid.

Hemm. You know, that never crossed my mind, but you're right. The ninja and the warrior from Dragon are similar. Of course this does lower my opinion of Fighter just a tad more, perhaps this movie should have been named The Fighting Dragon Kid....

reply

How about, The Fighting Dragon Hottie.

Could work, but is a tad sexist for the current political climate

reply

Ya, the current political climate is more comfortable with sexual pandering.

I really liked this movie. Parts of this movie reminded me of several films including Rocky, Karate Kid, Adventures in babysitting :), Dragon... Probably others. Cool cultural piece for a dumb American:)

reply

If the fighting should have been realistic I guess Xian Gao from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon was the wrong choice as martial arts choreographer! ;-)

I don't agree this is a KK remake btw. In my eyes this movie is about the friction between traditional, cultural values and a modern, Western society. But let's not argue about that. I guess we all watch with a different set of eyes.

reply

I found this to be less like Karate Kid (and especially Rocky) and much more like Bend It Like Beckham. So many of the plots elements in Fighter almost mirror exactly those of 'Bend It...'
