Does anyone else find this show hard to take seriously?

This show is obviously a hit with fans and is pretty highly rated on several websites. It's frequently recommended to people who liked Death Note, which is a series with a somewhat similar format (teenager receives a power, uses it to change the world. etc). I watched a few of the first episodes and stopped, I found the first episode to be somewhat interesting but as it kept going I started to realize that this shows was trying to be.. Everything. It incorporates almost every silly anime cliche and somehow mixes it with show that is supposed to seem dark and serious. Not to mention that Lelouch, while not an idiot, is intelligence isn't displayed as the super smart person the audience is supposed to think he is. After around 10 episodes, I skipped over to Code Geass R2 to see if it got any better. It didn't. It just got much worse. Along with everything else, I witnessed some of the most ridiculous plot twists and "deus ex machinas" I have ever seen being pulled out of magic hat. After that I dropped the show all together and sought out to anything else this life has to offer. Anyone else felt this way?

First you say you watched a few episodes, then you say you watch 10 episodes out of 28 episodes in R1, then you say you watched some episodes in R2 and proclaim that it didn't get better? Are you the type of delusional person who flips to the last 100 pages of a 1,000 page book and declare nothing made sense? No, I didn't feel this way. Code Geass is an amazing anime with some of the most memorable lines and music. You're a fool, so go find a rock to agree with you.

By a few episodes I did mean 10 of R1. I skipped most of it and it was just meh, nothing I found truly exiting. I wanted to see if R2 picked things up, like I said, it didn't improve anything. It made things worse. It started adding ridiculous plot twists that insult your intelligence and it is the most infuriating thing ever. You didn't even try defend that. Also, I'm not the only one who thinks this, I know there are people that agree with me.

How dare he not like this awful show that you like.

On a whole I would still say I enjoy the show, I don't rate it as one of the best anime of all time or anything, but id say it is relatively well paced and the plot is quite good.

There are definite cringe inducing moments where I feel the characters are overly dramatic or unnecessary explaining out loud what is going on, but I feel this is relativity common in a lot of anime.

To be honest id put it at a similar level to death note, I think Death note starts better than trails off and drags its heals after about the half way mark, after the death of L, and the subsistent, out of nowhere, replacement by the far less interesting N. Whereas i feel the latter part of code geass actually gets better.

If you are looking for a more mature show to watch then ghost in the shell stand alone complex is way better than both of these shows if you ask me.

reply

yes.

It tries to be mature but then at the same time incorporates so many childish and cliché elements ripped straight from your average generic shonen animes.

The military gear is pretty cool in design but the knightmares themselves look underwhelming. The characters are animated in a style that is reminiscent of girl-oriented romance animes meaning they look effeminate and way to cute to convay a sense of realism. The costumes they wear look rediculous.

This series is way too over-dramatic right from the start, no build-up at all. Episode 4 where lelouch appears as zero is where I gave up...so over the top, fit for any of the countless crappy animes out there, not for the few clever mature ones of wich code geass is not a part.

And then there is the geass power which is what you get when you do a less convincing ripp off of death note's shinigamis.

Definitely agree with you on that as well. Death Note honestly does the whole basic concept that Code Geass uses a lot better, Monster is also infinitely better than Code Geass.

reply

Better than Code geass? Not even close. It could've b3en a masterpiece but it has far too many flaws.

reply

Code Geass really is one of the worst anime ever.Of all the anime I've seen this is the one I have the hardest time sitting through. I agree with everything youve said.
