Could a Hollywood verison of Code Geass ever happen?

Being serious for a moment, I actually strongly believe there will be a Code Geass movie sometime in the near future. Typically anime series don't translate well into big budget Hollywood movies, but I think Code Geass would be the exception to the rule. Code Geass has a strong advantage translating to Hollywood in that three of the four leads would be white. The reason we don't see a lot of anime translated into Hollywood blockbusters is that Hollywood doesn't believe they can attract a large enough audience with an all Japanese cast. As a fan of anime, I wouldn’t want Hollywood taking an important anime series and ripping it apart to make it marketable to the majority of Americans. I believe Code Geass is the movie that could break through because Lelouch, C.C and Kallen could all be played by mainstream Hollywood actors, not to mention everyone from Britannia. (I know what you’re going to say, that Kallen is half Japanese but you could get away with her being played by a white girl) While I have absolutely no evidence to back any of this up, I’m curious of what your thoughts are.

In the first season at least, Knightmare Frames were essential, the only reason anyone would want less Knightmare frames is because of the crap they did to make R2 a completely mainstream anime.

I definitely think it's possible. Maybe they could have a 3-hour-or-more running length; then they wouldn't have to cut out so much.
Personally, I think the four leads (and all the other younger characters) should be played by unknown actors.

As 1 film no it'd never work.

But if they went for a Trilogy then it might.

Leaving Commercials and credits how long is each episode? I think a LOTR treatment could turn out quite well.

A Live Action film would actualy have British Actors for the Britianians, and so on (Cristina Bale needs to play someone) which would be cool.

Actually the main reaons for the changin ethnicity's in Anime Live Action is the Japanese for some reason don't depict thier ethnicity accurately and mroe of then not Anime character look Anglo-Saxon and even down right Arayn. It's sad but it's true, just look at the Live Action Sailor Moon in series in Japan, with actualy Asian actors they all fail to look anyhting like their animated counterparts.

And when I watch an adaptation of somehting form a visual medium despite where the person may be written as coming from I want the Live Action version to look as close as possible to being the character come to life.

This particular Anime is a exception there, they can everyone the nationalities they where written to be in Live Action and still come off just fine. Including the Japanese and Chinese character who still in the Anime do have some Asian characteristics.

Whilst I personally don't want to see a Hollywood representation of this series, I can see where you're coming from... And only until about a week ago did it occur to me that it could be possible... Primarily as you said because each character actually has their own actual "race", i.e. Japanese etc.. And truthfully, I actually believe that it could be the anime that would break through the stereotyped "fail system"... However, it'd need to be handled rather delicately... There's probably only a small handful of actors that could pull it off.. And and even smaller amount of directors..

However... As said by someone else, the main intrigue behind Code Geass is the twist and cliffhanger combo at the end of each episode.. And frankly, that'd be hard to capture in a movie....

My belief (along with others it seems) is that it would need to be either broken up into 2-3 films.. OR... An extended feature film.. i.e. 3-4 hours... But knowing filmmakers, if they were to go with either of those decisions, they'd go the former... More money...

Anywho, could work, I'd hope it works if they do decide to make it... But there's an equal if not greater chance that it might NOT work....

Time for bed now..

I've actually thought about this idea too.

However, knowing Hollywood, the location of Area 11 would probably be moved to a different island country like Hawaii. Could you imagine an alternate timeline for Hawaii? Hell, Turtledove's already doing one for the lost city of Atlantis.

But, speaking of such changes would be blasphemy on the internet.

I've encountered you before, I recognize the Signature (Very funny BTW).

I don't think they'd change where Area 11 is, the usual problem adapting Anime has is fixed by how most main characters are Britannians.

It all depends on who's in charge of it.

I would, rather, enjoy something like an HBO series like they're (still?) doing with George RR Martin's fantasy series (you talk about long). Because, as a movie, you'd have to cut so much plot and characters. And I can't see Mao's parts being cut, seeing as how essential his story brings up Suzaku's development and Lelouch's eventual fopah(?). I can hardly forgive the manga for cutting Cornelia (as far as 3 volumes show).

Plus, you gotta admit, the plot for second season would have to be reworked to be less rushed and convoluted. And I would rather less knightmares than story.

Seriously, I would love to write an alternate history on Hawaii about something similar. Not direct copy, mind you, just something really far out.

I had a few problem with what R2 did, especially early on anyways, I didn't like how it made Suzaku seem like a Villain.

Yeah, it was a little annoying, I must admit that R2 wasn't as good as the first.. BUT, despite what they did with some of the characters and whatnot, I still believe that it was a good series...

reply

Yeah it did allot of awesome thing, I just wish they had a better way to start it.

They could do something similar to how they did Star Wars, making R1 into a trilogy and R2 into a trilogy, but make each movie 2 1/2 to 3 hours long. That way they won't have to cut out too much of the story and they can still (sort of) have the element of suspense by ending each movie with a cliffhanger.

(And they should cast me as Shirley :D lol)

Everyone heard me say HBO, right?

*re-reads HBO post*

yes, that is true.
As far as changing R2, they could use the author's original vision. I read that he was planning to go a different direction but wasn't able to for some reason.

reply

Uh... any info sites telling us more about the author's original plans?
