Disappointing and awful (spoilers)

My theory is that Zack Snyder wanted to create a homage to terrible direct-to-DVD action flicks, similar to the way Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Grindhouse’ paid homage to 1970s exploitation films shown in the now-defunct "grindhouse" theaters. Instead of damaged film reels and “missing reels”, Snyder’s film is a out of focus blur via his use of the Canon Dream Lens, a relatively obscure piece of equipment developed in Japan in the ‘70s.

Of course, Snyder didn’t tell anybody this was his intention with ‘Army of the Dead’. Maybe he wasn’t even consciously aware that he was doing it himself. It’s just my own explanation as to why, from the cringe-inducing needle drops to the awkward chemistry between our anti-heroes, Snyder’s latest movie is such a misfire all around.

Fans of unnecessary carnage beware: as enticing as the idea of seeing Dave Bautista wipe out swarms of zombies with an assortment of heavy machine guns and pointy sticks might sound, the reality is mostly cheap, ugly, dull and blurry.

Even judged by the standards of an up-and-down career, ‘Army of the Dead’ is desperate - the product of a self-indulgent creator clinging to outdated narrative concepts.

agree with everything you said...

I too own and Like DOTD and was somewhat excited for this but Its was just terrible

Its seems Snyder had a decent idea for a different type of Zombies, and then wrote just a terrible story and movie around them...

I was blown away by how "cheap" the movie and action looked....I'm a stunned that this had a 70 Million dollar Budget.

I can not believe this is getting decent reviews and Netflix is going forward with sequels and trying to build a universe around it...

This movie just isnt nowhere near good idea to do that

It’s baffling to me, too. If I had to guess, I’d say that Netflix (a) wants to tap into Zack Snyder’s perceived popularity after years of #ReleasetheSnyderverse trending on social media and (b) just wants the content, whether it’s good or bad.

Not surprised.

Expect the Netflix sequels to go full-blown with their you-go-girl-lesbian lead. Don't be shocked if they tap Ruby Rose for the top billed spot, so she can showcase how she can take down massive 300lbs zombies barehanded.

Expect the costars to consist of more tough-as-nails black women, a few black/Mexican male fodder, and the typical handful of evil white men.

It's all predictable at this point, and thoroughly disgusting.

Good to hear, I didn't make it past about 15 minutes and gave up. Now I know I did the right thing.

You saw the opening musical montage. That’s enough.

Yes, it was very, very The Asylum-ish. Effing sad.

Something that stands out like a sore thumb and really cheapens the film is the use of poorly FXd airsoft guns in place of blank firers. If you're going to have a zombie film like this with a lot of shooting, try and put some effort in. I get the reasoning for using airsoft guns for safety etc but there's a reason lots of films opt to use proper blank firers.

Most movies today are now TV movies. That's the way I approach them. The second the industry decided to to Day & Date, which is making movies available for home viewing the same day that they are in theaters, they become TV movies.

So, I approach "Army of the Dead" this way. Like any other Netflix movie, it's just on their network to pass the time while doing laundry, etc. They're not taking it seriously, so why should we?
