Ivan's wife affair

Why Ivan is not surprised or even offended by discovering his wife in the bed with his cousin?

Is it a French thing (sharing your partners with other people you love)?

I thought that was weird too. He told their kids that she didn't come into their room last night because it was late, and she didn't want to wake them. But when he saw her in bed with the other guy, she had no clothes on. I can understand if she were dressed, it would look more innocent. But naked?

I can't imagine that your wife having sex with someone else is just a French thing.

There were a lot of things done & said in the move that made me think "people just don't do/say that." I didn't really like the movie, especially considering how much the critics did.

Yeah.. It's as if when they looked at each other, they had almost both accepted it already. I think it also has to do with that conversation they had earlier, the whole "Have you slept with every man here?" line the first night that they hooked up in the room. My guess is that Ivan had already known deep down that it was Simon and Sylvia that were meant for each other from the start so he was sort of alright with it -- which is kinda, weird though. And they also had that conversation over a smoke outside the building. Man, I don't know.

OMG, that was when the movie jumped the shark for me. I was REALLY enjoying it and then when that happened, the WAY it happened, I was like WHAT. THE. HELL. I can totally believe them sleeping together but then the kids walking in (I also thought it was kind of gross that her and Ivan had sex while the kids were in the room earlier, but granted, I don't have kids so maybe one day this will happen to me) AND the husband walking by in his robe and coffee like its A-OK? In what the hell bloody culture would this happen? Ah yes....France. I was really grossed out after that point.

well it will be interesting to have some french people comment on this. I personally interpreted it that the husband did NOT suspect the two of having made love. After all, they weren't in each other's arms; and it looked to me like it could have been two mattresses side by side.

However, anyone who has seen a lot of french films will know that nudity and sex are much more casual things for them; not so puritan and controlled by strict moral code like in the u.s.
The experience of a love triangle (menage a trois, anyone?)is something seen in many french films, old and new.

The whole subplot could have been mostly excised. It slowed down the movie, especially because it was basically introduced 2/3 the way through. It was almost like "and now something for you to do."

I feel if they left it as it was for the beginning of the movie, an issue hanging over them, and left it more understated it would have been a bit better.

Do you people realize how dumb you sound when you say something like, "So this husband doesn't react when he discovers that his wife cheated on him. Is that a French thing?" No, it's because the movie's script called for the character not to react.

That's like saying: "I was watching this Italian movie and this one character shoots a bunch of people. Is murder an Italian thing or something?"

It was pretty strange way to behave- but then again just about everybody in this movie behaves strangely.

In my opinion Ivan acknowledges that with marriage he stopped being the shy, fragile emotional wreck that he's described as by the rest of the family. He became a man, has two children and can stand up on his own. He furthermore acknowledges that Sylvia and Simon were perhaps better off with eachother and he was with her due to Simon's sacrifice.

Sooo I guess at that holiday he was basically saying "You guys helped me become what I am today; in exchange do as you will". That's sort of what I took it to mean. I guess it could be suggested that ultimately Simon loved Sylvia more than Ivan.

I watched it with a friend who for reasons I didn't see perceived Ivan to actually be furious but hiding it. He hid it very well if that's the case!

Personally I liked this subplot- actually I liked all the subplots. It's a strange, deliberately frustrating movie with more questions than answers (and in this case it's a good thing). This triangle was just as baffling to me as the Henri/Elizabeth feud.

The way I see it. Ivan expected it. He wasn't surprised. He could sense over the years they had feelings for each other. Without getting yelled at. Actually affairs are far more rife in France than many places and depending on your relationship obviously taken on then chin. I didn't like this scene but Ivan felt it was neccessary for her to get it out of her system having married very young for them to move on

I agree that Ivan expected it. But still Ivan's reaction to seeing them was still felt unnatural. Any husband that loves his wife would be furious if she caught him in bed with another man, especially if it's you're cousin. And the wife's reaction was a little strange too, she was very non-chalant about being caught, almost like she didn't even care. After all this time do we find out she has no respect for her husband?
I don't know, I didn't buy it.

I think those posting about this - wrote this way because they assumed that the moviemakers contemplated that a French audience would NOT walk out of the theater at the absurdity of a husband failing to object when his wife is sleeping with his cousin.

Throughout this film, people act and react in ways unknown to any human beings I've ever known. There is absolutely no response to so many things that are done -

Henri's profanity and repeated insults somehow does not cause the father to say "you're gone",

the daughter's refusal to permit her brother's presence at family fatherings does not cause the parents to say "No, he is in the family. He will be present - and if you object, you needn't come" -

the murderous waving of a knife by the grandson to his mother do not cause the parents to even spank the son - let alone just take the belt off and wail away!

the appearance of his nephew after 6 years absence does not cause Henri to act warmly toward him

the flagrant adultery of his wife with his cousin does not cause her husband to denounce her - but instead to reach for her hand in love

the delivery of a certificate stating that the grandson is a compatible donor to possibly save her life does not cause the grandmother to say thank you - but instead to abandon the house and go shopping

Indeed, attending church even on Christmas seems to be a "maybe it will be fun, maybe it won't" decision by a mere three of the entire family to attend mass.

It's a family of utterly non-human, unrecognizable, aberrant behavior - among the least likable people you'll ever want to see or hear. And remarkably, in truth no one seems to realize how perverse they are.
