The Therapist is Awful, Awful

The therapist that meets with Josh and Amanda was just horrible. He just sort of took what Amanda said about wanting to end the relationship at face value. It's not like the therapist could even suggest that they take a break during Amanda's sickness, i.e. bipolar episode. What's sad is that there ARE therapists like this who have no idea how to help. His idea of helping was to facilitate the break-up of a relationship that could have likely been salvaged had he not bought into Amanda's very skewed perception of the relationship as being somehow "over." So like a complete idiot, the therapist "speaks" for Amanda (an insult to the client, by the way), telling Josh essentially that "the relationship is over." He usurps the client's right here to speak for herself. Still, I thought it was a realistic portrayal of how GOD Awful some therapists really are.

As a trained clinician I was appalled when I saw that therapy scene. I don't recall Amanda saying that she wanted to end the relationship. that seemed to be a conclusion he drew on his own. also, this was the first time he met the couple so it was outrageous to me that he would suggest such a drastic lifestyle change. He essentially stripped her of her only support system which wasnt fair to anyone. I really didn't think it was appropriate for him to speak for his client and it really isn't the position of a therapist to make a decision like that for a client or to push them in such a direction so strongly. That was the most offensive scene to me.
