NO ALBERT?!?!?!?!

I am very disapointed. Albert Finney did such an amzing job and now he wont be here for the big finish. Damn! Scott should call Albert up now!

reply

I agree.

I'm disapointed as well. From the shorts I've seen the movie still looks fab but Albert Finney would have been the icing on the cake.

Anybody know why? Is he just too old now? Did they even consider him for the role again? I just watched The Gathering Storm to prepare for the premiere of Into the Storm, and I agree that Albert Finney was incredible. Although, I do have hope for Brendan Gleeson, so we'll see soon enough...

I really don't understand why Albert Finney and Vanessa Redgrave could not reprise their roles. Finney wouldn't be too old to play Churchill because Finney would have been around 72 when they filmed and Churchill was 65-71 in the time that is depicted in the series. I think Gleeson will be quite good though. Finney hasn't been the only person to masterfully play Churchill. Robert Hardy was quite good ,especially in 'Winston Churchill: The Wilderness Years', so Gleeson has a shot at greatness even if Finney is a tough act to follow.

Frank: Just a man.
Harmonica: An ancient race.

Brendan Glesson was very good, but as it was a direct sequel to The Gathering Storm I'm surprised they didn't get Albert Finney to reprise the role.

reply

bloody hell, what are you you people thinking?

Albert Finney is almost 75 yrs old ... how could he play a role of a middle aged man? He was absolutely brilliant in the Gathering Storm but his time for such a role is long past.

ten minutes into this movie Gleeson had me convinced he WAS Churchill. fine job all around imo.

reply

Churchill was 65, not middle aged, when he became Prime Minister, Finney would certainly not have been too old to reprise the role.

reply

Albert Finney will be 74 in May. He is not too old to play Churchill.
See the following link to an article as to why he did not reprise his role.
I have also read that for that part he had to shave his head and then wear some kind of headpiece/wig thing. He also had to tuck his head down and and into his neck to appear shorter. Had to be fairly uncomfortable.

Thanks for the link.

You're welcome for the link, dodrade.

Did anyone notice that although both Finney and Gleeson recieved an Emmy for his Churchill portrayal, Finney also won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA. He was also nominated for a Screen Actors Guild award.

Gleeson did not win the Globe, and he wasn't nominated by the Screen Actors Guild. Film BAFTA nominations were just announced, but not the television nominations yet. He'll probably get a nomination. Maybe he'll win.

Anyway, imo, although Gleeson may be a very fine actor, and did a great job in Into the Sorm, his performance could not reach the caliber of Finney's. Simply put Finney is one of the most gifted actors to ever grace the screen and stage. Only a few living actors are even in his league. I wouldn't count Gleeson among them, even though he's an excellent actor.

reply

I really like Albert Finney, but Gleeson was stunning in the role of Churchill.
